Here is a reason you shouldn't force a machine that is stuck, or run a machine that hasn't been used in a few years without having it inspected and serviced. These gears have chewed each other apart probably when someone tried to run it when it was seized. Always service your machine when you haven't used it in a few years.

This sewing machine was seized by a broken needle jammed in the hook. Someone probably threw this machine away because they didn't know what the problem was. If you break a needle, be sure to find the pieces before you start sewing again.
