It is not enough that restaurant industry employees just show up to work on time.

Or, as is far too often the case, even show up at all.

That is only the beginning.

While at work, employees must also take accountability for their actions, most especially when it comes to safety, health and security.

When employees understand what is to be expected of them, they take a more active role and feel more confident, and their performance is greatly improved.

In turn, a much safer, healthier and more secure restaurant environment is created for everyone.

Today, don't just show up. Show up ready to take an active role wherever you are.

People do not only become what they are told.

They become what they practice and repeat.

And in the restaurant and bar industry, being a safe and responsible alcohol server and manager goes far beyond just taking a course once.

Training in safe alcohol service is, or should be, always continual and ongoing.

When it isn't, countless people are put at risk of being injured, maimed, sickened, or killed.

What are you doing to continually train yourself today?

Of all the burns that occur in our industry, there’s one that we have seen become catastrophically more common:

Hot coffee and hot tea burns in drive-thrus 🚗

Many people have no idea how serious of a problem this has become in the restaurant industry, let alone the causes behind it or the industry standards that restaurants are supposed to know when they get into the hot beverage business.

And now, people are getting horrifically burnt and scalded at epidemic proportions.

Hot coffee in a word is – hot.

In two words it is – super hot.

The industry standard is clear, and the decisions handed down from courts across the land are clear – hot coffee and hot tea must be served hot, and at the temperature it is served, it will scald you if it comes into contact with human skin.

Everyone working in the restaurant industry either should reasonably know that.

But there are many other industry standards to prevent those burns and scalds from happening in the first place - and everyone working the restaurant industry either should reasonably know those too.

Our 2026 content about to launch. Super stoked.

In the restaurant world there is an “I” in “team."

Because if one person gets injured, sickened, maimed, or killed and we go and find out that it was because one person dropped the ball...the entire team and the entire business is going to pay for the price.

Quite honestly, it doesn’t matter that the highest-ranking management person was not onsite that day.

It doesn’t matter that the owner was on vacation in the Bahamas and hadn’t been there in weeks.

It doesn’t matter who everyone else wants to throw under the bus.

It doesn’t matter that the manager is brand spanking new and hasn’t received all of her training yet.

If an individual has been given authority, then they have a management role and responsibility.

If they have responsibility, they better know their role, they better know their stuff, and they better be managing the stuff, the people, the premises, the systems, and the standards.

Ignorance is no excuse.

Little mistakes can make a lifetime of difference.

We see it in the restaurant and bar industry far too often.

A bartender overlooks the visible signs of intoxication.

A manager skips the de-escalation training.

An employee ignores a verbal argument in the corner.

And next thing you know, someone is catastrophically injured...or killed.

Many policies and procedures may seem like simple steps, but skipping them could lead to disastrous results.

Hospitality is about relationships.

It is devoting the time to take someone’s jacket or pull out someone’s chair.

It is asking Mrs. Jones how her child did at soccer camp and wishing Mr. Smith best of luck on his fishing trip.

It is caring.

It is knowing the names of your customers and ordering an extra dollop of ice cream for Billy because you know he loves it.

Hospitality is enjoying people just because.

Hospitality is enjoying life and the place you work and having a genuine desire to share.

Be hospitable today and take care of your relationships - no matter what industry you are in ❤️

Hot coffee and tea burns in drive thrus are often worse than what anyone realizes...until it affects them.

Many people assume that hot beverages are simply an uncomfortable but harmless part of life, but the reality is that they can cause lasting damage.

In severe cases, spilling very hot liquids like coffee can cause scalds and burns that can lead to long-term effects like permanent scaring or even loss of body parts.

For this reason, it is essential to be mindful of the hazards associated with hot beverages and serve drinks to the industry standard for safety, health, and security for all ☕ 🚗
