It is that time of year where honeybee swarming is likely. If you come across a honeybee swarm in Virginia (similar to the one shown on a pear tree in the picture) and happen on this post, please contact the closest beekeeping club to the swarm. The local club will be happy to help and generally have a list of members that they can use to identify the closest beekeeper to remove the swarm. Swarming is how beehives naturally reproduce - i.e. a new queen remains at the original hive with about half the bees and the old queen with the other half is in this swarm sending out scout bees looking for a suitable new home. While a clustered honeybee swarm is generally very docile, it is best to still keep your distance and let the beekeepers handle the removal. If no beekeeper is available, that's okay too. The swarm will eventually locate a suitable home (hopefully not yours🙂) and will usually be gone within a few days.
