Toolbox Tuesday! 🧰

Good quality sleep is key to keeping a sharp mind!

Here are some helpful tips for you and your loved ones living with dementia to support a better night’s rest:

💤 Aim for 6–8 hours of sleep each night
🧘 Use relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or progressive muscle relaxation
🍬 Avoid caffeine and sugary foods at dinner time
📵 Limit screen time before bed to help the brain wind down
💧Diffuse lavender essential oil throughout the night for better quality sleep.

Small, consistent habits can make a meaningful difference in sleep quality, mood, and overall cognitive health.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

All older adults deserve dignity, safety, and security, but elder abuse is a silent problem that can take that all away. It’s important to remember that elder abuse can happen to anyone, and to learn the signs and what to do if you suspect elder abuse.

Educating older adults, professionals, caregivers, and the public on abuse is critical to prevention and stopping elder abuse when it happens.

Get the facts and help shine a light on this issue. ♥️⬇️

Elder abuse is a silent problem that robs older adults of their dignity, security, and—in some cases—costs them their lives. Get the facts and learn how NCOA supports reauthorization and funding of the Elder Justice Act and elder abuse protections in the Older Americans Act.

Toolbox Tuesday! 🧰

Next in our brain health tips series: use of essential oils. Aromatherapy isn’t just about pleasant smells. It’s about neuroscience.

When we inhale essential oils, aromatic molecules travel through the olfactory nerve directly to the limbic system—the part of the brain responsible for emotion, memory, and behavior regulation. No other sensory input reaches the brain this quickly or directly.

🧠 What research shows:

Inhaling certain oils can influence neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA.

Citrus oils may reduce cortisol and increase alertness.

Floral oils may activate parasympathetic responses, reducing heart rate and anxiety.

Lavender oil may possess properties to aid in healing, alleviate insomnia, and help to ease anxiety.

Resins (like copaiba and Frankincense) are known for their anti-inflammatory, soothing, and mood-balancing properties.

Wood oils (cedarwood or sandalwood) may support feeling grounded and calm.
