Some highlights:
1. Soils are so important and you can mess up a healthy soil profile, needed for beneficial insect and microfauna, by working in the soil too soon. Especially if you have crews come in for spring cleanup.
2. Consider No-Mow May!
3. Timing: Waiting to clean up the garden until after pears and apple blossoms have faded will protect a strong majority of native bees from losing overwintering resources.

Early spring garden cleanup can disrupt critical invertebrate habitat and leave pollinators out in the cold. Our guidelines will help you determine when cleaning up won't bug the pollinators in your space.

Pollinators and beneficial insects need our help:
1. Avoid (Eliminate) pesticides.
2. Plant native plants.
3. Remove invasives.
4. Reduce your lawn!

Sad research reveals that the use of neonicotinoids is linked to bird population decline. So please don't spray or at a minimum, pay attention to what you or your maintenance people use! This article will help you ID which compounds are considered "neonics". If these are listed in the product, do not use!

So good to see public/private partnerships doing the right thing.
"Thanks to the monarch agreement, more than 45 companies in the energy and transportation sectors and countless private landowners will provide habitat for the species along energy and transportation rights-of-way corridors on public and private lands across the country. Participants will carry out conservation measures to reduce or remove threats to the species and create and maintain habitat annually. Although this agreement specifically focuses on monarch habitat, the conservation measures will also benefit several other species, especially pollinating insects. "

The agreement encourages transportation and energy partners to participate in monarch conservation by providing and maintaining habitat on potentially millions of acres of rights-of-way and associated lands.
