On June 10, 1985, Coca-Cola did not immediately announce the return of its original formula. Instead, facing intense backlash over the release of the sweeter “New Coke,” Coca-Cola executives originally pushed forward with their new product. The decision to bring back the original formula—which was officially rebranded as “Coca-Cola Classic”—was announced weeks later on July 11, 1985.
Country music singer Don Williams was a prominent figure in the saga. As one of the most vocal celebrity critics of the formula change, Williams became a symbol of the consumer resistance. When the company finally relented, he received one of the first two cases of Coca-Cola Classic in Nashville during a press conference on July 30, 1985, marking a victorious moment for original Coke loyalists.
