Setting out my coffee for tomorrow morning and grabbed this mug. I had to stop for a moment because it made me tear up a little.

I had a few of these made last year when my son's favorite teacher, his Band Director Mr. Humphrey, announced he'd be leaving the school at the end of the year. The man loves his coffee, so I asked my son to give me a quote he always shared with the class. "Be in our moment." I loved it, so I turned it into a mug for him and one for me.

Well, last night was the final "our moment." My son had his final high school band concert. Eighteen other seniors stood beside him as we proudly recognized the graduates of the Wind Ensemble. They played their pieces beautifully. One last time on stage together. They were in their moment.

Sometimes, like last night, we recognize the moment. Other times, we speed through the moment looking ahead to the next one and the one after that.

I knew last night was a moment, but how many have I missed? Be in our Moment. What a great lesson from a great teacher.

Or maybe it's just a coffee mug.

Emotions are vital to our decision making process. Sometimes we'll have a hunch or a gut feeling about something. That's an emotional reaction. We should listen to that.

Sometimes we'll have a situation that makes us anxious or nervous. Maybe it's a situation that makes our blood boil. Those are other emotional reactions. We should listen to them.

But, we shouldn't always act based on just those emotions. Emotional regulation is the psychological term. I like to say 'own your actions.' Yes, emotions are vital, but they mostly are a chemical reaction that is feeding us information. Unless we're in an immediate crisis life or death situation where instinct needs to take over, emotions should not be the primary factor we consult in making decisions. Emotions need to be balanced out by our logic, critical thinking skills, and basic reasoning.

The most successful people don't let their emotions control them. They use that emotional input as one component in their resolution of a situation. They own their actions.

Are you feeling stuck?

Do you keep telling yourself, "Maybe tomorrow," or "Things will get better?" I know. I've been there. We've all been there.

But you don't have to stay there. No one is going to change your situation for you. Sure, there are lots of people who will help you willingly, but you have to take the first step.

There's only so much you can control in your life. The biggest thing you can control is you.

So what's it going to be - Are you going to wait around and ask permission, or are you going to embrace the strength within, get off your ASSets and move anyway?

That's the

Thanks to The Wellness Detective for attending my Grounded and Unstoppable launch, and for this review.
I can help you with the mental side -- be sure to reach out to her for helping with the physical side of carrying your stress. You might be surprised to see how what we carry inside truly affects us physically.

You have the big idea. A dream. A goal. A change you want to make. But you just can't seem to pull the trigger.

When you think about it you have a good job. It's not your favorite, but it does pay the bills. It allows you to do most of the things you want to do. Sure, there are mornings you dread getting out of bed. You get a case of the Mondays more often than not. You feel like Wednesday should be Friday because the week has felt like the longest month ever. (You KNOW what I'm talking about.)

But you're comfortable. You could keep doing this same song and dance over and over. You'll be fine. You're not miserable - you're just content. Comfortable.

But as Frasier once said, "If less is more, think how much more more would be." Go for more.

Comfort is expensive. It's keeping you from using all your skills and talents. Do you want comfort? Or do you want to thrive? It's not just about the money. It's about the cost to your family relationships, your mental health, and even your physical health.

Comfort is expensive. You've made the plan. Now live the plan. Get off your ASSets.

I love this so much.
We are all going through something. There's some drama or trauma, some sadness or worry. But we don't know what someone else is going through. There's no way to tell what's happening in someone's head or heart by looking at him or her.

What you can do is find a way to help, even in some small way. You may brighten that person's day just enough to help him or her power through some pain. And you definitely will feel better about yourself.

Keep it simple: be a great teammate today. No matter what you are going through, find someone you can help and make better.

Wow! Looks like I've gained some new followers, so I probably should post something. I'm enjoying Spring Break right now (my last time ever to chaperone a school trip), so instead of posting about leadership or personal growth, I'm going to share a few photos from my trip!

When you get stressed or face burnout, emotions run high. When we find ourselves in that exhausted state, we sometimes let those emotions take over.

We lash out
We shut down
We take offense
We don't recognize ourselves

What we forget is that emotions are information, not instructions.

Emotions are one more tool in our toolbox. Without a plan for emotional regulation when we reach those low points, our emotions are like a vacuum cleaner without a bag. They get turned on but go everywhere.

Let's work together to learn how to focus and control those emotions.

Get started by joining me at Grounded and Unstoppable on Tuesday, April 14th. https://www.facebook.com/share/14cLh7H2JJV/
