My company, ListenMore LLC, works with other in-home service companies and one thing I have noticed since starting this journey is that owners/managers perform poorly when it comes to training their employees.
It's not because they don't care, but just the opposite. They care too much. They are afraid of hurting someone's feelings and so they won't tell an employee that they are doing something wrong. While other employees watch and gets frustrated by the actions of the employee and the inactions of the management, the poor employee who is at fault is usually trying their best and thinks they are doing everything correct until one day the manager has had enough and shares with the employee that he/she is doing something incorrect. Now the employee is thinking to themselves that they have been doing everything correctly this whole time and management is "picking on them" or company policy has changed.
Do your employees and yourself a favor and correct the behavior immediately. You can be kind but direct. You will need to share what your expectations are from the start and when they stray, share with them again what you are wanting them to do.
When you hold someone accountable to the standards you set, there is no guesswork, and you become a team and the team grows.
