Since I received a scam call today let's talk about it! It's a long one...
Received a call from "my bank" stating they were from the fraud department. Now before I go any further just know my cell phone alerted me that it was a likely scam call, but I would not have given any information to anyone who just calls me out of the blue.
The woman stated there were three transactions flagged, and asked me if I had been traveling. I did say no I had not been traveling but if she could tell me what account this was in reference to. This was that conversation.
Me: Can you tell me what account?
Scammer: Your checking account.
Me: Which one I have several?
Scammer: The one used regularly
Me: They are all used regularly. Can you tell me the ending 4 numbers of the account we are discussing?
Scammer: The account begining in ###x.
Me: So it's not a checking account you are referring to a bank card. So which account is the card tied to?
Scammer: It's three transactions, well two with the bank card and one from Zelle. (She proceeded to tell me the transactions)
So let me pause here. You see she never told me what account and tried to deflect either transactions however Zelle (which I have never used or opened an account) is a 3rd party that the bank allows customers to utilize. The bank would have to get you to Zelle to talk about those transactions they do not have access to them. Also I was looking at my mobile banking and no transactions were showing.
Me: So to do my due diligence I am going to call "my bank" since your number came up as likely scam.
Scammer: They will most likely transfer you over to me but I can also have someone in our fraud department call you back.
Me: No need. I'll call "my bank" if I get back to you it will be fate. Have a great day.
I called "my bank" and nothing is there however I did shut down my bank card to be safe. They also transferred me to Zelle, which they have to do, and I have no account with them just as I thought and nothing was showing with my information.
I tell this story because Identity Theft is real and very active. This woman sounded professional and like the real deal so I share this story to remind people again, when in doubt, hang up and call back to the people you have a service through, like your bank, never any number they give you or agree to a call back. NEVER give them any information or click on my link they may send you.
