The History of Lake Lanier
From North Georgia River Valleys to a Landmark Lake

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lake Lanier has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in North Georgia. Today, millions of people associate the lake with boating, fishing, camping, swimming, beautiful waterfront homes, and summer vacations. But Lake Lanier is not a natural lake. Its story began with a massive federal construction project that permanently changed the landscape of North Georgia.

Officially named Lake Sidney Lanier, the reservoir was created by the construction of Buford Dam across the Chattahoochee River. The lake also receives water from the Chestatee River and stretches into several North Georgia counties, including Hall, Forsyth, Dawson, Lumpkin, and Gwinnett.

The Idea Behind Lake Lanier
Plans for controlling the Chattahoochee River developed during the first half of the twentieth century as communities throughout the Southeast searched for better ways to control flooding, generate electricity, improve navigation, and manage growing water needs.

When people think of Dahlonega, Georgia, one mineral immediately comes to mind: gold. The discovery of gold in the late 1820s brought thousands of miners into the North Georgia mountains and helped establish Dahlonega as one of America’s best-known mining towns. Yet gold was not the only valuable mineral hidden beneath the hills of Lumpkin County. Copper mining also became part of the area’s industrial history, particularly at the Chestatee Mine northeast of Dahlonega.

How Copy Machines and Digital Color Copiers Changed the Printing Industry
Copy Machines like the ones at the local Print Shop in Dahlonega, GA have revolutionized the printing industry
The printing industry has experienced enormous technological changes over the past several decades
The printing industry has experienced enormous technological changes over the past several decades. Few developments have had as much impact on everyday commercial printing as the introduction of the modern copy machines and, later, the digital color copier. These machines changed not only how printed materials were produced, but also how quickly customers expected their jobs to be completed.

Before digital copying became common, commercial printing was largely a production-oriented business. Producing even a relatively simple brochure, flyer, form, or booklet could involve several separate steps. Artwork had to be prepared, photographs and text assembled, plates created, presses set up, ink adjusted, and sheets printed before the job could move to cutting, folding, binding, or other finishing operations.

For larger quantities, traditional offset printing was—and remains—extremely efficient. But for customers who needed only 50, 100, or 500 copies, all that preparation could make a small printing job relatively expensive.

The printing industry has experienced enormous technological changes over the past several decades. Copy machines as much, or more, impact than anything
