Its probably due to my years in mathematics, but I am always looking at constraints. Floors, ceilings, the impacts. When I came across system constraints and bottlenecks, in particular waiting-times in queueing theory, I began to contemplate maximum utilization at the bottleneck and maximum revenue generation for a given setup ... for example a store front operating a maximum at the bottleneck (usually the registers) or a service-labor based business and labor usage.
This article looks at throughput and how throughput can link operations, finance, and strategy. It impacts maximal rate of revenue generation, capital investment and wasted investment, and overall strategic planning. It is a fairly simple supply-side concept to grasp but often overlooked, assumed or forgotten about within demand-side focused finance models. I believe that it can be useful to focus a deeper understanding of actual operational processes and activities within finance and help to encourage communication for better planning.
