Barely any air coming out of the vents, or a new rattle from the indoor unit?

Before you replace a blower motor, look at the wheel it is turning. A blower wheel packed with dust moves less air and throws the balance off, and a wheel with a bent or broken blade will shake the whole assembly until something else fails.

If you are buying one, three things trip people up:
Diameter is measured across the OPEN end of the wheel.
Width is the blade pack including the end rings — the hub does not count toward it.
Rotation is read from the hub side, not the open end.

Diameter, width, bore, rotation and inlet type all have to match. Bring the old wheel to the counter and we will match it in your hand. We do not need a model number, we need the thing you are holding.

El diametro se mide del lado ABIERTO de la turbina.
El ancho es el paquete de aspas con todo y los anillos — el centro no cuenta.
La rotacion se lee del lado del centro, no del lado abierto.

Diametro, ancho, barreno, rotacion y tipo de entrada tienen que coincidir. Traiga la turbina vieja al mostrador y se la igualamos en la mano. No necesitamos el numero de modelo, necesitamos lo que trae en la mano.

Somebody quoted you a system, and the brand on it is one you have never heard of.

A minisplit is a throwaway. A ducted system is not. It goes in the house for fifteen or twenty years, with the coil in the attic and the lineset in the wall. Ten years from now one question matters: will anybody still sell you a part for it, and who handles the warranty claim if the company that sold it to you is gone?

Three things worth asking before you buy a house brand.
Who honors the warranty in year eight?
Who stocks the parts?
Who is still going to be here in 2036?

The fan on top of the outdoor unit is not turning, or the air handler is not moving any air.

Before you buy a motor, find out whether the motor is what actually failed. A bad run capacitor will take a perfectly good motor out of service, and it is one of the cheapest parts on the system. Bring the old motor and the old capacitor in. We test both free at the counter, metered, no purchase needed.

If it is the motor, do not order off a picture. Horsepower, voltage, RPM, rotation, frame and shaft all have to match. Universal does not mean it fits anything. Get the nameplate off the old motor, or just bring the motor with you and we will match it in your hand.

One thing worth doing while you are out there: pull the top and look down through the condenser coil. It can look clean from the outside and be packed solid between the fin layers. A motor working against a coil like that cooks itself, and the new one will do the same.

El ventilador de arriba de la unidad de afuera no gira, o la manejadora no esta moviendo aire.

Antes de comprar un motor, averigue si de verdad fallo el motor. Un capacitor de marcha malo deja fuera de servicio a un motor bueno, y es de las piezas mas baratas del sistema. Traiga el motor viejo y el capacitor viejo. Los dos se prueban gratis en el mostrador, con medidor y sin necesidad de comprar nada.

Si si es el motor, no lo pida por foto. Los caballos de fuerza, el voltaje, las RPM, la rotacion, el frame y la flecha tienen que coincidir. Universal no quiere decir que le queda a todo. Saque los datos de la placa del motor viejo, o mejor traigalo y se lo igualamos en la mano.

Algo que vale la pena hacer estando alla afuera: quite la tapa y vea hacia abajo por dentro del serpentin del condensador. Puede verse limpio por fuera y estar tapado entre las capas de aletas. Un motor peleando contra un serpentin asi se calienta y se quema, y el nuevo va a hacer lo mismo.

Rheem runs Copeland and US Motors - names with a real aftermarket behind them, which is exactly why we can still get you a compressor or a condenser motor for that unit in year eight. On some brands, at the smaller tonnages, what you get is a coin flip. Same money either way. You just do not find out which one you bought until it quits.

"Do you have a universal one?"

Friend, we need to talk about that word.

There is no such thing as a universal motor bracket. A "universal" TXV will not fit every refrigeration unit. And a universal blower motor still has to match your horsepower, voltage, rotation, frame, shaft and speed taps — that's five or six things that all have to be right.

Universal means "covers a range." It has never meant "fits anything."

The good news: bring us the model number and we'll tell you exactly which universal actually covers your unit, or whether you need the OEM. That's what the counter is for.
