In 1988, the rules governing business ownership for U.S. women entrepreneurs changed.

The Women’s Business Ownership Act of 1988 (H.R. 5050) became law.

This helped remove barriers that had made it harder for women to build businesses.

It eliminated state laws that required women to have a husband or male relative co-sign a business loan.

It also established the Women’s Business Center program and created the National Women’s Business Council.

35+ years later, we celebrate the efforts of those who championed women business owners, while recognizing the work continues.
