The Reflection Trap
Most people think reflection is looking back at what went wrong.
It's not. It's looking forward at who you're becoming.
I used to do reviews wrong. I'd sit down Sunday night and beat myself up about what I didn't accomplish. What I failed at. Where I fell short.
That's not reflection. That's punishment.
Real reflection is different. It's asking: "Given what happened this week, who do I need to become next week to move forward?"
It's not about the past. It's about the future identity you're building.
Here's what changed when I shifted: I stopped feeling guilty about my week. I started getting excited about who I'm becoming.
When I didn't hit a goal, I didn't ask "Why did I fail?" I asked "What identity do I need to build to hit that goal next week?"
When I compromised on a standard, I didn't ask "Why am I weak?" I asked "What identity do I need to reinforce to hold that standard?"
It's subtle, but it's everything.
This is why the weekly review in DPM Journal is so powerful. It's not just measuring what you did. It's reflecting on who you're becoming.
Every week, you're asking: "Am I becoming the person I want to be?"
If yes, you keep going. If no, you adjust.
That's the game.
Most people never ask that question. They just keep grinding, wondering why they feel stuck.
The executives who transform are the ones who review relentlessly, not to punish themselves, but to clarify who they're becoming.
What identity are you building right now?
