It’s easy to get so focused on the next title, the next promotion, or the next salary increase that we lose sight of why we wanted those things in the first place.

For me, career success isn’t just about what you accomplish professionally.

It’s about the life you create along the way. The experiences, the memories, and the time with the people who matter most.

Your career should support the life you want, not consume it.

Here's what I usually tell them:

What do you want your LIFE to look like... not just your job?

Because a title can sound impressive and still leave you miserable.

A bigger salary can still come with less freedom.

A “great opportunity” can still pull you further away from the life you actually want.

Before you decide what role to pursue next, get clear on the life that role needs to support.

Your career should fit into your life... not the other way around.

Your resume is not supposed to prove you can do everything.

It is supposed to make your value obvious.

At the senior level, more experience does not automatically make you more compelling.

What matters is whether someone can quickly understand:

→ What problems you solve
→ What results you create
→ Where you have made the biggest impact
→ Why that matters for the role they are hiring for

Your job search gets stronger when you stop documenting everything you have done—and start positioning what makes you valuable.

“Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

(Or in my world: those who can't, coach.)

I've heard it my whole career. And, I'll say it plainly: it's not accurate. At least not in how I run my business.

I put myself in my clients' shoes. Every single day.

Yesterday, I went through part of my network.

I do this constantly. I'm looking for people I want to reconnect with. No agenda. No ask. Just a check-in.

How are they doing? What's going on in their life? Is there any way I can help?

I pulled a few names and set up conversations to get them on my calendar.

Why?

Because you can't wait until you need your network to warm it up.

That's what I tell my clients. Keep it warm when there's no need, because it's so much harder to lean on people you haven't talked to in years.

I also apply for jobs on occasion.

Not because I need one. Because I want to feel how it feels for my resume to be a perfect fit for a role and then get an immediate rejection email.

Rejection never gets easier. But, I want to feel it, so I can truly understand what my clients are going through. That's how empathy is developed.

I do the things I tell my clients to do.

I would never ask them to do something I wouldn't do myself.

So, here's my challenge to you:

Open your network right now. Pick three people you haven't talked to in six months or more.

Send each one a simple message: "Hey, I was thinking about you. How are you doing?"

No pitch. No ask. Just a genuine check-in.

Olympic athletes do not compete without coaches.

Yet executives enter one of the most competitive job markets of their careers and try to figure it all out alone.

A coach does not run the race for you.

They help you train smarter, see what you cannot see, adjust your strategy, and stay focused when the pressure gets high.

The same is true in your job search.

Stop asking,
“What jobs am I qualified for?”

That question keeps you looking backward at your experience.

A better question is:
“What problems am I uniquely positioned to solve?”

Because companies are not hiring your résumé.

They are hiring you to solve something.

To grow revenue.
Fix a broken process.
Build a team.
Lead a transformation.
Enter a new market.
Create something that does not exist yet.

When you understand the problems you solve best, your entire job search gets clearer:
→ Which roles make sense
→ Which companies to target
→ How to position your experience
→ What to emphasize in interviews
→ Why someone should hire you

Your next role should not just match your past.

It should make sense for where you can create the most value next.

Before you rewrite your resume for the fifth time, check your target.

A resume can only position you effectively when it is clear what you are positioning yourself for.

If you are targeting too many roles, industries, or directions at once, your story gets diluted—and hiring managers feel that lack of clarity.

Start by tightening:

The roles you want
The problems you solve
The value you bring
The companies where that value matters most

Then build your resume and LinkedIn around that direction.

Clarity first.
Positioning second.
Applications third.

Your LinkedIn profile may not be bad.

It may just be invisible.

And that is a much bigger problem.

Recruiters are not reading every word of your profile. They are scanning for signals that tell them whether you are worth a closer look.

Your headline.
Your banner.
Your first two lines.

If those do not immediately communicate who you are, what you do, and the value you bring, your experience may never get the attention it deserves.

At the Director, VP, and executive level, strong credentials are not enough.

If your job search is full of applications, scrolling, and tweaking—but still feels stuck—it may be time to stop doing more and start getting more strategic.

Before you add another task to your list, refine the foundation:

Target.
Positioning.
Network.

When those three are aligned, the rest of your job search becomes more focused, more intentional, and far more effective.
