"Even just this phone call was an answer to prayer."

That's what a client told me during a first consultation, when her books and finances felt completely out of her hands.

I hear some version of that relief almost every week. It's not really about the numbers. It's about not carrying it alone anymore. ๐Ÿ’š

Y'all, let me explain what I actually do all day. Because "tax firm" does not cover it.

Think about your money like it has three jobs.

Bookkeeping tells you what happened. Where the money came from, where it went, what is actually left.

Taxes tell you what you owe. And more importantly, what you could do about it before the bill ever shows up.

Cash flow planning tells you what comes next. The hire, the equipment, the house, the slow season. All of it planned instead of survived.

Most business owners have one of the three. Some have two. And the ones who have all three working together? Their whole business feels different. Decisions get easier. April stops being scary.

That is the Money Trifecta. That is the whole reason UDG is built the way it is.

Tell me in the comments: which of the three do you have handled, and which one is running on a wing and a prayer?

Can I share something we don't talk about much publicly?

Every year, UDG processes tax returns for a handful of our senior citizens, free of charge.

We partner with local doula companies who support Black maternal health.

And we help small business owners position their finances for homeownership.

Internally, it's called UDG Cares, and it existed long before anybody thought to make a FB post about it.

Nobody told us to do this. There was no strategy meeting where somebody said community engagement performs well.

We just watched too many people get overlooked by systems that were never designed for them. And I had a firm that could do something about it.

So we did.

And honestly, some of the things I'm most proud of at UDG have nothing to do with how much we've grown or how many clients we serve.

It's knowing that we've been able to use what we know and what we've built to help people who may not have had access otherwise.

That has always mattered to me. ๐Ÿ’š

I had to get honest with myself about something.

I've always had control issues in my business.

Checking work that didn't need checking. Redoing things. Holding every single piece.

And when I finally sat down with the WHY, it wasn't about the work at all.

I learned to handle things on my own growing up. If I didn't manage it, nobody would. That's the wiring that kept everything from falling apart back then.

It's also the wiring that almost put a ceiling on my business.

Because I wasn't being a good leader. I was managing like someone who didn't trust anyone to show up.

Learning to delegate wasn't a systems change for me. It was trust work. And it's some of the hardest work I've done as a CEO.

If you're the one holding every piece of your business right now, I see you. That habit probably kept you safe once. But the team you're building deserves the chance to show up for you. ๐Ÿ’š

There's a picture on my phone that most people would scroll right past. But every time I see it, I remember one of the hardest weeks I've ever had in business.

I won't pretend it was some tidy turning point where everything clicked. It wasn't. It was messy and stressful and I questioned a lot that week.

But that weekend forced me to look at how I was running things. Not the version I described to people. The real version. The systems that didn't exist. The boundaries that didn't hold. The numbers I was avoiding because I was too busy doing the work to look at the business.

And what came out of that weekend changed how UDG runs today.

I'm sharing this because somebody reading this is in their version of that week right now. And I want you to know: the hard week isn't the sign that it's falling apart. Sometimes it's the thing that finally makes you build it right.

If the thing you've been avoiding is the financial picture, that's a conversation we can have together. That's literally what we're here for. ๐Ÿ’š

Y'all. It's the boss's birthday. ๐ŸŽ‰

Happy birthday to our Founder and CEO, Shay McNuckles.

She started this firm in 2008 with no team, no roadmap, just a conviction that people deserved better financial guidance.

Sixteen-plus years later, we're the team that gets to watch her walk clients through their hardest money moments and come out the other side.

If Shay has ever helped you, taught you something, or talked you off a tax-season ledge, today is the day to tell her.

Drop your birthday wishes below. ๐Ÿ’š

2008. That's the year I started Uptown Discovery Group.

One person. No team. No framework. Just a conviction that I was good at this work and that people deserved better financial guidance than most were receiving.

The journey between then and now included things nobody puts on a business plan. Surviving the recession. Navigating COVID when the rules changed week by week. Walking clients through IRS situations and the kind of financial stress that touches every corner of your life.

And doing all of that while rebuilding my own firm and raising my son.

By 2019 I trained more than 60 tax specialists. We built the Money Trifecta. We built a firm with real systems and a real team.

None of it happened in a straight line.

But here's what I know now that I didn't know in 2008: the credential that matters most in this work is not a certification. It's longevity. It's having been through enough seasons to know what you're doing when somebody walks in with a complicated picture.

If you've been building something for a while, this is your reminder: the years matter. The tested brand is worth more than the polished one.

What year did you start? Drop it below. Let's celebrate how far we've come. ๐Ÿ’š

Can I tell you why therapists are some of my favorite clients?

They spend all day holding space for everyone else. Listening. Guiding. Carrying things that aren't theirs to carry, because that's the work.

And then they come to me, and for one hour, somebody holds space for THEM.

Most of them started their practice because they're brilliant at helping people, not because they wanted to run a business. Nobody in grad school taught them about quarterly taxes or S-Corp elections or what to do when the practice grows faster than the systems.

So when we sit down and I walk them through their numbers, and I watch that exhale happen... the one their clients probably have in their office all the time... that's the moment I love.

You take care of everyone else. Somebody should take care of this part for you.

If you're a therapist, counselor, or anyone in the healing professions and the business side of your practice feels like the heaviest thing you carry, this is exactly what we do. ๐Ÿ’š

Your bank account is lying to you.

Not on purpose. It just doesn't know the whole story.

A healthy balance can be hiding a tax bill you haven't seen yet. And a thin balance can be hiding a business that's actually doing fine.

Your balance can't tell you what you owe. It can't tell you what's coming. It can't tell you whether you're profitable or just busy.

It's a number. It is not a report card.

Clean, current books turn a feeling into information. That's the whole difference.

If you're still running your business off the balance, it's time to tax plan. Link in bio.

I had a call this week.

He's been in business nine years.

Same tax guy the whole time. Sends over all his documents every year like clockwork.

And then the guy passes away.

Right after he sent everything.

Now his documents are wherever they are, and he's trying to figure out what he's supposed to do next.

And here's what got me.

He did everything right.

He filed his extension.
He paid his quarterlies.
He had it all on one spreadsheet.

He kept telling me, I try to stay ahead of the game.

And he was. He really was.

We got him sorted. Fees, timeline, what we'd need from him.

And then right at the end, after we'd already said okay let's do it, he circled back to the thing he'd been holding the whole call.

"What if you need something and I don't have it?"

That's why you hire a team.

A team that walks you through every step of the process. That can support your deductions in the event of an audit. That knows what the IRS is actually looking for.

Because when you do have a situation, that's who you want walking you through it.
