Before “West End Girls” became a worldwide hit, there was the original 1984 version recorded in New York with producer Bobby Orlando.

Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe look back at how “West End Girls” initially went largely unnoticed in the UK, and how its unexpected popularity on Los Angeles radio helped lead to the version we all know today.

Bobby O. might not be a familiar name to casual dance music listeners, but his influence on the sound of early ’80s electronic dance music, Hi-NRG and synth-pop was enormous.

May 1997, The Spice Girls are guest hosts on Top Of The Pops and present Rosie Gaines.

Rosie Gaines was a member of Prince’s New Power Generation, playing keyboards and singing alongside Prince on “Diamonds and Pearls.” In 1997 her song “Closer Than Close” became a massive UK hit, reaching #4 on the UK Singles Chart.

That problem feels bigger than ever now, with generative AI making it even easier to flood the market.

Released in 1994, “The Dream” was one of the early tracks that helped put Deep Dish on the international house map.
Their own label Yosh*toshi became home to several ’90s dance classics and helped shape the sound of underground house music.

Lidell Townsell in 1992 as “Nu Nu” was becoming one of the biggest dance records on the charts.

Lamar ‘Hula’ Mahone’s credits around this time were insane! He co-produced DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince huge hit “Summertime” and also produced and remixed Hi-Five “She’s Playing Hard to Get”. He co-wrote “Nu Nu” by Lidell Townsell and was also co-owner of Clubhouse Records, the label that released “The Percolator” by Cajmere. All in 1991 & 1992!

Hula would also become one half of The Outhere Brothers, who had a massive international hit in 1995 with “Boom Boom Boom”
