Throwback to 1991… St. Etienne “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” cassette single

Additional Production and Remix by LOUIE VEGA & KENNY ‘DOPE’ GONZALEZ for MASTERS AT WORK Productions, Inc.
Mix Engineer: Dave Darlington
Mixed at (the legendary) Electric Lady Studios in NYC

Electric Lady Studios were originally built by Jimi Hendrix and opened in 1970. Hendrix wanted a creative space with no rules, a place for musicians to experiment freely. Even though Hendrix only got to record there for a few weeks before his death, the studio became a hub of creativity for generations of artists.

Tonja Dantzler - In And Out Of My Life, cassette single 1993

From the Defected Records website:
Released in 1993 after Tonja Dantzler won a competition to have her record produced by Rodney Shelton, who was working at Motown Records at the time. The result was ‘In And Out Of My Life’ which was then remixed by Armand Van Helden transforming the track into a club smash.

In October 1999, THOMAS BANGALTER played this rave in Chicago and since my friends and I were massive DAFT PUNK fans at the time, we decided to fly to Chicago to see him DJ alongside some of our Chicago House Music heroes, including WAXMASTER MAURICE and ROBERT ARMANI from Dance Mania Records. This was still before the Daft Punk’s Discovery album had even been released.

THOMAS played a hybrid set that night, DJing on vinyl while also triggering samples and playing basslines live on a keyboard.

We ended up taking photos with Waxmaster Maurice and STACY KIDD (who was a last-minute addition after Robert Armani couldn’t make it). The photos of Thomas DJing didn’t turn out very well because he kept shining a flashlight into the camera anytime someone tried to take his picture - this was still the pre-robot helmet era.

It was an unforgettable night and an amazing weekend in Chicago. I also got to meet PAUL JOHNSON on that same trip (I have photos from that too) but that’s a story for another post 😉

In December 2025 I spent a few weeks in Mexico City and I came across a box of vintage promo photos from the 1960s & 70s at a record store. That’s one of the best parts about digging, you never know what you’re going to find.
These were a few of my favorites…

• ANDREA TRUE was an American disco singer and adult film actress, best known for the 1976 disco classic “More, More, More” with her recording project The Andrea True Connection.

• SERGIO MENDES was a Brazilian musician whose career took off with worldwide hits by Brasil ’66. Across 35 albums, he became known for blending bossa nova with funk, jazz and pop.

• SARA MONTIEL began her acting career in the 1940s. After moving from Spain to Mexico in 1950, she starred in over a dozen films in Mexico before eventually crossing over into Hollywood. She turned down a contract with Columbia Pictures because she didn’t want to be reduced to the stereotypical “Latina bombshell” roles Hollywood often assigns to Spanish-speaking actresses!⚡️

• ELVIRA QUINTANA was a Spanish/Mexican actress and singer who became one of the most popular performers in Mexican cinema during the 1960s. Admired for her beauty and talent, her career was cut short when she died in Mexico City at just 32 years old.

Last night signed my copy of the “Ride On The Rhythm” cassette single and talked a little about the album he recorded with Marc Anthony back in 1991. We also got to hear unreleased music from Louie’s upcoming Elements Of Life album on the amazing sound system at .hifi …an incredible night!
