When people don’t feel safe, they agree.
When they do feel safe, they tell the truth.
That’s why well-run focus groups are powerful—not because they collect opinions, but because they reveal the “why” underneath.
The yes beneath the words.
The hesitation behind the no.
The real reason someone chooses what they choose.
That’s the gold.
And when we can listen without judging—without fixing, without making it right or wrong - we can solve business problems with more humanity…
and human problems with more wisdom.

One of the most exhausting things in life is when someone is saying something untrue about you.

And if you’ve ever experienced it, you know the real damage isn’t the rumor…
it’s what it tries to do inside of you.

It tries to make you doubt yourself.

My daughter experienced this at school this week, and it broke my heart open—because I’ve seen the same dynamic in workplaces and families:
Someone wants control, so they create a story.

So here’s what I’m practicing (and what I’m teaching her):

Truth first.
Not revenge. Not proving. Truth.

Know your truth.
Seek truth.
Act in integrity.
Speak your truth with courage.

And then—choose your people.

Because here’s the hard truth:
Some people don’t want clarity.
They want a narrative that makes them feel powerful.

So if someone is committed to misunderstanding you, stop handing them the microphone.
Go nourish the relationships where you are seen, known, and safe.

Question for you today:
Where are you still explaining yourself to someone who has already decided who you are?

The fastest way to the right solution? Slow down.
Sounds backwards, I know.

But here's what 20 years of innovation work taught me -
Most leaders skip discovery because it feels like delay. They want action NOW.

The problem? When you jump to solutions without discovery, you're operating with incomplete information.
A sales team was convinced their brokers only cared about price. And every strategy they tried failed.
Then, 2 days of discovery interviews revealed the truth: brokers wanted respect, not better rates.
Respect for their brokers tripled their revenue in three years where prior price cuts had not.
Discovery isn't avoiding action. It's how you avoid solving the wrong problem.

The organizations that win aren't the fastest to solutions.

They're the ones who discover WITH their people first.

There's a difference between what people say and what they mean.
Customers tell you: "I want faster service"
What they're actually feeling: "I feel invisible and unvalued"

They say: "I need lower prices"
What they mean: "I don't trust this will work for me"

They say: "Make it more convenient"
What they mean: "You're making me do too much work"

This is the gap user design and qualitative research closes.

Surveys capture what people SAY.
Discovery reveals what they MEAN.

And that emotional truth? That's what drives actual behavior.

If you're feeling heavy today, you're not alone. I can feel the pressure and need to produce more begin to build in my body.

But I find calm in watching the sunrise and sunset - I can feel awe inside me by simply watching it. While it doesn't "fix" anything or move something off my to do list, it's a reminder that I'm still alive and there are moments of beauty right in front of me. In search of the beauty in the world....

Where do you find your calm?

I watched something shift in a project we kicked off last month.

A cross-functional team. Completely stuck. Marketing, product, strategy—everyone had been analyzing the same information but seeing different answers.
But they decided to do something different.
Instead of more analysis, we helped them listen to consumers together. Not through a deck. Through discovery.

It was fun to watch the team's transformation over the next 2 days of listening, seeing how their dynamics changed when they heard the same story—about a dad at the menu, glancing at his kids, then his wallet. Wanting to give them something special. Worried about the electric bill.
Suddenly, the team wasn't debating data points.
They were solving for a human trying to navigate a real moment.
They aligned. Due to listening together, all trying to save the same problem together.
That's what happens when teams discover truth together instead of analyzing it apart.

A leader told me recently: "My team isn't resisting change. They're just... empty."
Not because they don't care.
But because they've been through 4 restructures, 4 new initiatives, and endless frameworks—and nobody ever asked what they actually need to lead through it.

Change fatigue isn't about weak people.
It's what happens when transformation ignores the human side. The leaders creating change that sticks? They start differently.
They discover what their people need first. Then build from there.
1. Clarity instead of confusion.
2. Purpose instead of mandates.
3. Momentum instead of burnout.

Human-centered doesn't mean soft.
It means sustainable.

I was in a meeting last week with a leader who said something that I have been reflecting on:
"I'm so tired of being the only one who thinks the people side matters."

She wasn't wrong about her strategy. She had the data. The timeline. The plan.

But every meeting felt like a battle to justify why understanding what people actually need isn't "soft stuff"—it's what prevents the 70% failure rate.

I see this exhaustion everywhere:
1. Innovation leaders who know there's a difference between consumer feedback and consumer truth.
2. Culture leaders who know the difference between rolling out training and helping people discover what they need.

They're not wrong. They're just tired of swimming alone.

Finish this sentence:
"I'm so tired of defending _____________."

I'll go first: why the emotional truth matters more than another data deck.

I went to see Nate Bargatze last weekend, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how comedians are the ultimate masters of empathy.

They can stand on a stage and weave together dozens of perspectives — finding the thread that makes a room full of completely different people laugh in unison.

That’s empathy in action: understanding how people think, feel, and see the world, and translating it into something everyone can connect to.

If only more leaders learned to listen — and laugh — that way.

I got to catch up with my family and old (former, not old:) college friends at the Texas Tech game a couple of weekends ago — people who knew me long before this chapter of my life.

It reminded me how important it is to pause and reconnect with where we came from. Finding time to remember and laugh at the good times and our former selves have a way of grounding us — and sometimes that’s exactly what brings fresh clarity to where we’re headed next.

I had the joy of speaking with UTA Business Management students during Business Week —we explored how people support what they help create, why empathy makes strategy stick, and practiced finding the emotional problem to solve behind a business challenge.

It warms my heart to give back — especially with students who are hungry to learn, curious about people, and ready to make an impact.

Digital transformation isn't broken. It's just incomplete.

It's not struggling because of technology.
It's struggling because of trust.

We've built tools that automate, integrate, and optimize. Yet adoption rates stay low, engagement drops, and excitement fades.

Why?

Because we designed for efficiency, not for the emotions of the people using them.
Because we optimized the flow, not the fear, confusion, or hope behind it.
Because we followed the data, not the human.

70% of executives are investing in digital innovation.
But tools without empathy are just expensive friction.

So here's the real question: Are you asking "Will this work?" or "Will this help?"

The companies that win aren't the ones with the most features - they'll be the ones that remember business isn't about systems—it's about humans seeking trust, meaning, and hope as they solve real problems.

What if your next research question wasn't "Can they use it?" but "How will it make them feel?"
