The 1906 Pattern Tael is a quintessential rarity of the Chinese Empire; struck at the reestablished Tientsin mint with the intention of replacing the Mace-Candareens system, the Tael never saw circulation due to provincial dissent and the death of Emperor Kuang-hsĂź, leading to the abandonment of the project.
