From watching him grow up to helping him move into his college dorm — this one hit a little differently.

Building homes has been my career, but building a life and watching your children step into the lives they’re creating for themselves is the real work.

Proud doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Today I celebrate another year of life-and another year of helping homeowners, investors and developers bring their ideas to life.

It’s also my last year in my 30s.

The last decade stretched me in ways I never expected. It taught me resilience, patience, leadership, purpose, and the courage to keep building—even when the path wasn’t easy.

This year isn’t about slowing down. It’s about making every opportunity count, every lesson matter, and every goal intentional.

I’m grateful for every client, colleague, mentor, friend, and supporter who has been part of this journey. Thank you for believing in me and in the work we do at Lyles Home Design.

Here’s to making this last year in my 30s count—and building something even greater in the year ahead.

Michelle Lyles is a Design-Build leader, entrepreneur, and construction professional with more than 20 years of experience delivering projects across residential, commercial, retail, and entertainment sectors.

My career has spanned architecture, engineering coordination, construction management, owner representation, and design-build delivery—leading projects from concept and planning through construction and completion. I’ve had the opportunity to work with nationally recognized organizations including GHA Architects, GPD Group, Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas, and EMJ Construction while soft launching and growing my own company, Lyles Home Design.

Today, I help homeowners, developers, and project teams navigate the complexities of design and construction while transforming ideas into successful built environments. My passion lies in bridging the gap between design vision and construction ex*****on, mentoring future industry leaders, and creating pathways for women and underrepresented professionals in the AEC industry.

In my last article, I shared why beautiful home designs can fail without strong project management.

That conversation naturally led to a bigger question:

What role should architects and designers play in leading a project?

Architecture today requires more than creativity. It requires leadership — guiding projects, coordinating teams, navigating complexity, and ensuring that a vision becomes a successful build.

During Women’s History Month, I’ve also been reflecting on the growth it takes to step into leadership roles in industries like architecture and construction.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the most successful projects happen when designers embrace both sides of the profession — creative vision and strategic leadership.

In this article, I share a few thoughts on why the designer must also lead the process.

In my last article, I shared why beautiful home designs can fail without strong project management. The response reinforced something I’ve seen throughout my career in residential design and construction: Architecture requires more than creativity.
