Slip Into Calm Waters for a Mid-Year Check

I hope the first half of 2024 has left you feeling satisfied AND challenged in the way that spurs new growth.

It's a good time to stop and see our life from a broader perspective. To disconnect from the swirl of activity we find ourselves in, check for alignment to what's most important and determine what deserves our attention moving forward.

If you're curious about dropping anchor and taking more time to reconnect and recalibrate, I've crafted a few questions for reflection. You can find more robust prompts at https://lnkd.in/gB7VQWfY

* Am I being the person I want to be?

* Compared to how I thought the year would unfold, how's it going?

* Am I making the Impact I want to make?

I hope you take the time to refuel and refresh for a fruitful journey ahead!

What happened here?

I noticed several stories emerging within me about the egg in the middle of the street.

Some were sad, some were happy and hopeful.

We add the meaning to all that we see.

What do you give this? What else could be true?

Sometimes your gets a perfect opportunity to make a splash. And to prove a point.

Scouts of Northeast Texas CEO Bartkowski was recognized by the Dallas Business Journal last June as a Most Admired CEO. Of 29 recipients on the stage, she was ONE OF ONLY TWO WOMEN.

Girl Scouts is committed to developing girls of Courage, Confidence and Character who make the world a better place.

In order to make that impact, and to ensure more women stand on a stage amongst their CEO peers, is investing in their current and future leaders. They’re developing the skill sets and mindsets to Reimagine Girl Scouts.

So that more women will be recognized as Most Admired in whatever field they choose.

This is the final episode in the Reimagine Leadership series. Me and Bartkowski review key results from the multi-month, practice- and cohort-based program I designed for Scouts of Northeast Texas

People can’t be held accountable if they can’t say No.

Whaaat?

Ok, that’s an over statement. We don’t always have a choice. Sometimes we need to do things we don’t like to do as part of our work.

AND if team members are only able to say YES, they will carry out their work as an act of compliance rather than commitment.

Their hearts and souls will be left out of their work.

The organization will lose good ideas. And likely good people.

Over time, when there is no option to say No, results will suffer.

Have you ever felt embarrassed about your assessment results?

It’s not unusual to see people feel ‘wrong’ about their strengths, especially when they are in the minority. In this group of leaders only 4 of 44 participants tilted Impact ( ), which is a fast-paced, quick decision-maker that tends toward being direct.

Learning to embrace strengths and lean into areas of growth was a key takeaway across the board in this program.

CEO Bartkowski was an amazing role model, encouraging leaders at Scouts of Northeast Texas to own their strengths and develop areas that make them more well-rounded.

Delicious. Heart-warming. Soulful.

My words for the Beginning Again 2024 mini workshop at yesterday morning. The universe conspired and the weather held off until early this morning.

I think I was most moved by the share for the question, 'What are you most proud of in 2023?' and the capabilities that were built during what, for everyone, was a big stretch:

☀️ Resilience
☀️ Confidence
☀️ Facing reality (mortality of parents)
☀️ Managing change
☀️ Collaboration across many diverse groups
☀️ Persistance
☀️ Resourcefulness

What are YOU most proud of from 2023

What new capabilities did you build?

Designing and delivering the Reimagine Girl Scouts Leadership Academy was in my top 3 most proud accomplishments for 2023.

This podcast series hit the major topics and principals of the program. It began with a conversation with my client, .k.Bartkowski, and we’re concluding the same way.

Jennifer is the ‘very proud’ CEO of Scouts of Northeast Texas. In Fall of 2022 we launched this multi-month, cohort- and practice-based leadership program.

It concluded in May of 2023 with outstanding results.

Today we talk about the final results of the program and a few lessons learned.

Are you investing your precious energy being at the mercy of others’ expectations?

Dr. Chris Johnson is passionate about identifying ‘energy leaks’. This is something she really brings to the table.

I feel this concept of ‘leaking’ viscerally in my body. Like life force is escaping, leaving me without the energy I want to deploy towards what I love. What’s it like for you?

Chris describes just 1️⃣in this clip but she explains 3️⃣during our conversation.

Being at the mercy of others’ expectations means that we’re unconscious or even reactive and possibly incongruent with what is important to us.

Are you uniquely qualified to grab the low hanging fruit or might your energy and attention be better invested in more complex activities?

Do you get tempted by doing what’s quick and easy? Quick wins are one way to feel accomplished AND they may not be the best use of your time.

This story of the CTO jumping in to write code is a metaphor for us all. We all have our version of focusing on quick wins.

Sometimes we need that feeling of accomplishment.

Invest your energy wisely.

Do you think you’re good at ?

You might be decent at task switching but there’s a cost to that.

It depletes our energy.

We lose our momentum and our ‘place’.

Sometimes we aren’t even able to pick the thought thread back up.

This topic is so important that it made it to the first chapter of Dr. Chris Johnson’s book, “The Leadership Pause” (which I highly recommend).
