I stumbled upon this interview with Pat Metheny and decided to share an excerpt from it which expresses a growing concern that’s been creeping up on me for years now. The only thing I would change is the word “jazz” that the interviewer uses in his question to Pat. I would substitute the word “music” instead, in order to get MY point across here.

Q. What's the biggest difference between jazz today and jazz in the 1970s?

A. Then and now, I really just try to honestly represent in sound the things I love about music.

I am not a huge fan of the whole idea of "genre" or styles of music, to start with. To me, music is one big universal thing. The musicians who I have admired the most are the ones who have a deep reservoir of knowledge and insight not just about music, but about life in general and are able to illuminate the things that they love in sound. When it is a musician who can do that on the spot, as an improviser, that is usually my favorite kind of player.

I feel like I am a musician in this broad sense first. And all the subsets of the way music often gets talked about, in terms of the words people use to describe music, is basically just a cultural/political discussion that I have found that I am really not that interested in in the same way I am interested in the spirit and sound of music itself. That interest really transcends generations or specific decades.

SO, if you are finding that the YouTube videos you're turning to to learn your favorite songs aren't giving you the results you are seeking, then give me a shout. The thing about those YouTube "teachers" is THEY CAN'T HEAR YOU (and bad technique can sometimes take years to reverse)! Plus, they don't know you, or even care about you! One-on-one music instruction is a time-tested institution that goes back centuries and nothing, I mean NOTHING, can equal the benefits gained from studying privately with an experienced, professional musician/teacher who can help to shape and guide you into becoming the player you've always dreamed of being. It's all about nurture and personal interaction (meaning IN PERSON:).

From me you will learn the many tools that are needed to be a player in the real world, where a musician is expected to know what to play in any and every situation. You will learn Music---not just songs, but how and why those songs actually work. We will work together towards you becoming an IMPROVISER, thus being able to pull music out from your instrument ON THE FLY. I will turn you into a player that can handle all the many styles that are thrown your way because you understand Music. I've been doing just that my entire life as a professional guitar player and love teaching others how to do the same.
