The famous statue by Auguste Rodin called The Thinker has great significance when it comes to speaking.

Why? Because most people don't seem to follow his example.

That simply means they are not doing the deeper, harder work of putting time and mental effort into their preparation. Knowing both your subject and your audience requires some time, effort and deeper thought. And if you respect yourself and your audience you'll do both.

Preparing your thoughts into the most clear, brief and simple verbal delivery is hard work. BUT, it is worth it!

You have the chance to show you can do that kind of work again next week. Sign up and show up. THE WORK IS REWARDING!

“If the average person said what they were thinking, they would be speechless.” Earl Nightingale

Not only is that quote very funny, it is also very telling when it comes to the work of thinking.

Before you speak you must do some thinking, preferably honest, logical sound thinking. It is both unfortunate and boring to hear a speaker who is only parroting what many others have said. By that I mean they are either quoting or paraphrasing with little depth of understanding in what they are sharing.

It is smart to learn from those who are truly wise. It is also smart to understand why they think what they think and say what they say. To do that you have to do the work of thinking.

You can’t blindly follow what they say without understanding the motive and the principles that are the foundation of their thoughts and ideas.

When the blind lead the blind everyone ends up in the ditch. When those who don’t think try to speak the end result is just as bad.

Good speaking comes from good thinking. Good thinking requires work. Do the hard work first and everything else will follow. Including your success as a speaker.

“Your thinking can change the structure of your brain, which is called mind directed neuroplasticity. This ability of mere thought to alter the physical structure and function of our gray matter is powerful.” Dr. Caroline Leaf

https://www.meetup.com/The-Speakers-Academy/ He's looking at you with a SMILE on his face...makes you laugh, doesn't it?

There are a variety of ways you can calm your nerves AND look more confident, but the one that works the best (in my opinion) is to SMILE! It warms the visual of you AND it makes for a quicker and easier rapport with your audience. It is the universal non-verbal language of friendliness.

We'll be back to our regular 4 FREE sessions in about 12 days after this move I'm going through. Sign up now and block out the time on your calendar. You'll be glad you did. https://www.meetup.com/The-Speakers-Academy/

"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' The danger lies in refusing to face the fear, in not daring to come to grips with it. You must do the thing you think you cannot do." ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Butterflies got’cha?

You know that churning feeling in your stomach that constricts your breathing, causes your pulse to race and your palms to drip? Although it is common to almost all who speak (especially in the early stages) it doesn’t make it easier to live with.

So, what do you do to get those ‘butterflies to fly in formation’ and not out of your mouth? SMILE! Yes, instigate and illuminate your face with a contagious smile. It will literally change your mental mush into a state of greater calm and give others who are looking at you the feeling you are totally in control.

Even though your mind may be racing as fast as your pulse, you will ooze confidence and begin to feel in control when you put the best of all human connectors (the smile) on your face.

Believe me, I know from experience, it works. Try it and see. I’ll be smiling at you!

The Scientific Secret to Performing under Pressure

Amelia Boone was standing in a wetsuit, clutching her knees, the wind whipping against her face on a frigid Chicago winter morning. She was running on Lake Shore Drive, while dunking herself in and out of the icy waters of Lake Michigan. Observers decked out in layers of warm winter clothing assumed that these were the delirious actions of a madwoman. But no, the Queen of Pain—as Boone has come to be known—was getting ready for the World’s Toughest Mudder.

The World’s Toughest Mudder makes a marathon look like a casual stroll. The race is run for 24 hours non-stop. Participants must fight off sleep while conquering roughly twenty of the “biggest, baddest, most insane obstacles” scattered across a 5-mile course. It’s survival of the fittest: Whoever completes the most amount of laps wins.

Some of the obstacles are in water, which can drop down to freezing temperatures. To prevent hypothermia, all participants run in wetsuits. While on land, the wetsuit helps preserve the body’s warmth since body heat tends to dissipate over the course of the grueling 24 hours.

Boone is a corporate attorney at Apple by day. When she first started training, she couldn’t do a single pull-up. She’s now a four-time world champion and among the best obstacle racers in the world. Her secret is to subject her body to the same intense conditions that she’ll experience during the race. “You don’t race on a treadmill with Netflix in front of you,” Boone says, “so you shouldn’t be doing your training like that.”

The rain, the snow, the dark, the cold, the wetsuit—they all beckon Boone. By the time the race rolls around, she has been desensitized to the conditions awaiting her. She greets them with a smile that seems to say, Nice to see you again. Let’s dance.

There’s a name in rocket science for how Boone trains: test as you fly, fly as you test. According to the “test as you fly” rule, tests on Earth must mimic, to the greatest extent possible, the same conditions in flight. Rocket scientists test the spacecraft as the spacecraft will fly. If the test is successful, the flight must take place under conditions identical to the test. In a machine as complex as a rocket, any significant deviance between the test and the flight can result in catastrophe.

The same principle applies to the training of astronauts. The day-to-day reality of an astronaut’s life is vastly different than the glamour you see in Hollywood movies. Astronauts are workhorses, not space cowboys. They don’t fly in space for a living. They train and prepare for a living. “I’ve been an astronaut for six years,” writes Chris Hadfield, “I’ve been in space for eight days.”

The remainder of their career is spent on preparation. By the time astronauts fly on their mission, they’ve flown the route countless times on simulators. These simulators generate crises on Earth, which prepare astronauts for actual crises in space. Astronauts practice computer crashes, engine troubles, and explosions, while constantly asking themselves, “What’s the next thing that can kill me?”

Most of us ignore the “test as you fly” rule. In our personal and professional lives, most practices are superficial dress rehearsals that double as exercises in self-deception. We practice in conditions that are disconnected from reality. We do mock job interviews in our sweatpants with a friend using a predetermined set of questions. We practice a major speech in the comfort of our home, when we’re fully rested and awake. As a result, on gameday, we are blindsided and we choke.

If we applied the “test as you fly” rule, we would practice our speech in an unfamiliar setting, after downing a few espressos to give us the jitters. We would do mock interviews while wearing an uncomfortable suit and with a stranger ready to throw curveballs at us.

Whether it’s a rocket launch, athletic training, or a job interview, the underlying principle is the same: Test as you fly—subject yourself to the same conditions you’ll experience during the flight—and you will soon begin to soar.

“The visual sense dominates all of the senses. The visual channel communicates with power and impact.” Bert Decker

How important are the eyes?

The eyes of both you and your listeners are your strongest point of connection and potential relationship. When you realize and maximize this super-highway of building rapport it will revolutionize the way you engage them.

Memory experts usually emphasize techniques linking the information you want to remember to a visual image. An abundance of research shows conclusively that out of all the brain’s sensory input, it is the visual input that makes the greatest impact. Please don't forget that salient fact.

The nerve pathways of the eye to the brain are twenty-five times larger than those from the ear to the brain. These facts work for you as the speaker and for your entire audience as well.

When you use your eyes to connect with and relate to your listeners and build a dialog with them on this continual connection both you and they benefit. The believability of your message has its foundation in what you see AND what they see. The eye connection.

Looking deeply, knowingly and empathically into the eyes of your audience you will know what to say, how to say it, and even why it is important to them. It is a roadmap on that super-highway to reinforce and deepen your emotional engagement with them.

You get a glimpse into their souls if you take the time to look. Do it well and they won’t forget you.

Who is your coach? Who is that person who challenges, directs, encourages and supports you in the learning process and direction you want to take?

If you're wise, you'll be very careful who you choose for that important role. Just because someone has a big name or reputation or charges a large fee doesn't mean he/she is the kind of coach that will be right for your growth and personal development.

Two very important components will help you make that vital decision; Character and Competence. Does that person exemplify the type of high integrity and values that attract you? Does he/she show from years of experience they have the knowledge and skills to help you improve and acquire what you are seeking to accomplish?

If not, keep looking. If so, make the investment that can save you years of work and lots of frustration to achieve the world-class outcomes you desire. It's worth it.

"Practice isn't the thing you do once you're good. It's the thing you do that makes you good." Malcolm Gladwell

They show your poise and practice. Or they show your nerves and unconscious actions.

Your arms and hands can be like skillfully used paint brushes for your words adding to the canvas of your message in a purposeful and beautiful way. But it does take practice!

Unless you were taught what to do with them and have practiced the proper use of your hands and arms they can feel like ‘problems’ stuck to your shoulders.

Are you trying to hide them behind your back or putting your hands in your pockets? If so, you are showing an uncomfortable reaction rather than a practiced placement.

If you have never seen yourself on video you will probably have no clue what you normally do with your hands and arms. There are simple proven actions that will help you feel comfortable with those two appendages. But, without purposeful practice your actions will be the same as most unpolished and undisciplined speakers.

Make a decision to learn and improve today. You can do it! And a good coach can help.

“Nonverbal communication is a language, it’s a very complex language, and just like any language, the cues, like words, can mean more than one thing.” Patti Woods

"A smile is contagious; be a carrier." Anonymous

Smile. Right now, just smile.

Did you feel it? That subtle, almost imperceptible shift that happened in your mind is a result of what you do with your face. Smiling changes your thought process.

It’s almost impossible to hold a smile and have a negative thought at the same time. Your smile paves the way for positive reactions from your audience too. They feel your warmth, your friendly disposition and your willingness to swing wide the door of openness when you share a smile with them.

If you want to quickly win friends and influence people begin with a sincere smile, a ‘nice to meet you smile’ and watch the doors open.

It is the easiest facial expression to give with the greatest return on your investment. And if you add a positive nod of the head along with the smile it is saying “yes” I’m glad we’re building this non-verbal bond of acceptance between us. Even on the phone, your smile echoes in your voice. Don’t believe me? Try it and see for yourself.

It is the spark of warmth and friendliness that illuminates your face and connects you to your listener like nothing else. Let it beam like a halogen lamp. Try it today. I’ll be smiling at you!

The Power of a Child’s Note to Seal a Real Estate Deal

Looking for a change of scenery the Touzel family moved to Wagga Wagga, five hours west of Sydney, in January last year. After renting in the area for six months they started looking for a home to buy.

But they soon found themselves smack bang in the middle of a booming real estate market as COVID-19 saw more people working from home and looking to move out of the city.

"We noticed the prices were really going up," Bec Touzel said. “We were seeing a lot of offers being made that were above asking price because people were so desperate to get in."

"You might see a house advertised for $410,000 but then it would go for $430,000-$440,000." Before long, the family had made 10 offers on homes and missed out each time.

To make matters even more stressful, their rental property's lease was due to expire in December and the owner had told them he wanted to put it on the market.

"We were prepping for an open home at our rental and then going to open homes," Mrs Touzel said, adding that her daughters Abigail, aged 10, and Jemima, aged 8, were also getting discouraged after going to see so many open homes.

"I think Abigail was aware of a bit of a deadline feeling with the rental and she just wanted to help out," she said.

It was during this time that the family went to see a home up for sale down the road from their current rental, Mrs Touzel said.

"We decided to go along to the open home even though it was a bit over our budget. We loved it as soon as we walked in," she said. Mr and Mrs Touzel decided to put in an offer on the house, despite knowing it was likely to be too low.

After returning back from the open home, Mrs Touzel said she found a note on her bed from her daughter Abigail, along with $11.75 of her pocket money in coins.

The note from Abigail read..."Dear Mum and Dad, this is your money now for the house and other things if you want. Don't take them back they are yours now."

On a whim, Mrs Touzel added a picture of her daughter's note along with their offer when she sent it to the real estate agent. "Within half an hour the real estate agent rang me and said, 'Oh my goodness, that note has had me in tears. I'm going to send it along straight away with your offer,'" she said.

"We heard back within an hour to say look your offer is a bit low, can you come up?" After a bit of back and forth, the Mr and Mrs Touzel decided to go a little bit higher with their offer.

After not hearing back for a few days, Mrs Touzel said she was convinced they had missed out again. "I thought, 'Oh no, we've blown it.'

But then the agent rang and said, 'You've got the house. They had full price offers on the table, one lady is going over asking price - but they just can't get your note out of their heads.'"

Mrs Touzel said she was told the vendors had two daughters of their own and remembered going to look for their first home. The Touzel family moved in just before Christmas last year. Mrs Touzel said they were enormously thankful to the vendors.

"The vendors were so generous - it's really mindblowing in today's world where money is what rules," she said. Mrs Touzel said Abigail was dumbfounded when she was told the role her note had in securing the house.

"I think she was quite astonished, that it had such an impact, but she was very excited as well," she said.

"I've kept the note and we will frame it and talk about it in the future with her."

“I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts.”—John Locke

Your body movements matter more than you know.

Your physical behaviors show what you are thinking even when you’re not aware of them. And your audience is watching. Good presenters use all of their tools in a practiced and focused manner.

Using your head, arms, legs and entire body in a controlled and purposeful way makes your verbal and vocal message come to life. Notice the words ‘controlled and purposeful’. When any part of your body looks out of control or moving without real purpose it can be very distracting and even annoying to your audience.

Make your movements with purpose so they harmonize with your words. Synchronization is the key. This normally takes focused practice and good coaching to bring out your deeper intentions. When you practice with video or in front of your coach you can see and understand what you look like before you deliver to your audience.

Your listeners will appreciate your entire visual message that unites words with actions. They share their appreciation of you and your actions with smiles, applause and their own kinds of visual and vocal support.

Actions do speak louder than words. What are yours saying?

“Real life expressions are inherently ambiguous. Of course, this is true for body gestures, too. [But] we rarely experience the ambiguity, because we rapidly integrate multiple cues in the context of the specific situation.” Todorov

https://www.meetup.com/The-Speakers-Academy/ For those just beginning to hone their craft as a speaker it may be difficult to understand the power and importance of the visual. That's because they often feel that the words and how they are delivered is the hard stuff, the most important stuff and the thing they wrestle with the most.

Yes, words are important. Yet if your audience can't hear your words because the image of you is incongruent or incomplete those words won't really matter. YOUR VISUAL, which starts with your attire and grooming, is THE starting point for a great connection to your audience. Over look it to your own peril.

"Behavior is the mirror in which everyone shows their image."- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Go to the mirror first. It’s not about ego or trying to look perfect. It is about looking and being your best from a visual perspective.

Look carefully, before you go before your audience. Give yourself a detailed checkup from top to bottom and in between to avoid the faux pas of smudged lip stick or eye liner if you’re a woman, food in your teeth or an unzipped zipper if you’re a man.

Those are mistakes that can be avoided with a good mirror or if that’s not available an observant, trusted friend with good eyesight. If you miss something that is obvious to your audience it screams you may be missing important things in your presentation too.

It is a preventable distractor that may take only a second to correct. Do it now.

Your visual, how you look from head to toe, is the first and most important aspect of building credibility and trust in the minds of your listeners.

Let your audience focus on the important stuff in your presentation rather than be distracted and derailed by little visuals that are out of place or inappropriate. Both you and your audience will benefit.

“One of the scariest things in the world is to stand in front of the mirror and meet yourself.” -Philip McKernan

“In today’s world, there’s already too much stuff. People don’t need any more stuff. What they want – and will pay almost any amount for – is a never ending cavalcade of enchanting stories that tell the world who they are.” Daniel Levis

You were inspired! How? By hearing the latest statistics, facts and figures on how your company avoided another loss in the stock market. NO!

Even though statistics, facts and figures might help us avoid loss and stay afloat financially they don’t usually inspire us when a speaker shares them.

What inspires us is the brave or heroic acts of people just like us who make tough, sometimes gut wrenching decisions that ultimately help us avoid calamity or collapse.

Those insightful stories told at the right time and in the right way bring us the inspiration that gives us hope. That’s what a great presenter does and that’s why they are great.

Stories tell and stories influence us, inspiring us to do the right thing. Are you telling the right stories when you speak to your audience? If not, perhaps today is a good day to start.
