Many of the views of these Big Tech oligarchs are rooted in a once-fringe Silicon Valley ideology called “transhumanism,” Sanders writes. “Transhumanists believe that technology will allow us to transcend humanity either by creating a new species or by combining ourselves with machines. Why go beyond humans? Because these new ‘posthumans’ will be smarter than us. They will be infallible … They will live forever.”

“If these were the fantasies of teenage boys obsessed with science fiction, we could laugh them off. They are not,” Sanders continues. “These are the foundational beliefs of the most powerful people in the world, who are mobilizing trillions of dollars to turn them into reality.”

The vision Big Tech oligarchs have for the future is getting only more frightening, Sanders writes: Elon Musk is building Neuralink to implant chips in people’s brains in order to achieve a “symbiosis with artificial intelligence.” Peter Thiel, the billionaire co-founder of Palantir, has decamped to Argentina, where President Javier Milei has called for the establishment of “non-human corporations” operated by AI agents. An Anthropic co-founder, Christopher Olah, has been trying to convince religious leaders, including the pope, that AI could be conscious.

“Almost no one outside Silicon Valley wants this future,” Sanders argues. “There is a reason why 91 percent of Americans think we need guardrails on AI, why 74 percent do not trust the leaders of AI companies, and why 73 percent are concerned AI could threaten human survival.”

“We must place an immediate pause on advanced-AI development and ban artificial superintelligence—an artificial mind smarter than any human, capable of operating independently beyond our control—until a new federal body is able to ensure the technology’s safety,” Sanders continues. “That’s why I have introduced legislation with Representative Greg Casar to do just that. AI is an existential threat to humanity. It must be treated as such.”

California businesses are now banned from using AI-powered surveillance tools to collect data on workers’ brain activity or infer their emotional states, under a law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).
The law restricts AI-enabled systems that can use video, audio, time-tracking, geolocation, or electromagnetic monitoring to collect neural data or recognize employees’ emotions.
The law comes as AI-powered workplace surveillance tools are expanding beyond tracking where and how long employees work to attempting to analyze biological and emotional signals.
Employers that violate the law can face civil penalties of up to $500 per violation, with enforcement handled by the state labor commissioner and public prosecutors.

Texas businesses and public-sector organizations: AI governance is no longer something to put on the “future” agenda.

Texas now has enforceable requirements governing how organizations develop, deploy, procure and use artificial intelligence.

Under the Texas Responsible Artificial Intelligence Governance Act, TRAIGA, organizations operating in Texas need to understand how their AI systems are being used and whether those uses create legal exposure, particularly when AI affects people, their rights or access to important opportunities and services.

For Texas state agencies and certain governmental entities, the requirements go even further. AI inventories, governance standards, employee awareness training, oversight and documentation are becoming part of the operating environment.

And this is bigger than ChatGPT.
