That gap isn't a reason to slow down on AI. It's a diagnostic. It tells you the tool was pointed at the wrong problem, or dropped into a process that wasn't ready to use it well.
I've seen this same pattern on manufacturing floors before AI ever entered the picture. Running new equipment through processes that were never redesigned to use it. New capability without a redesigned process just produces a faster version of the same bottleneck.
Here's the three-step audit I run before recommending any AI tool:

McKinsey also found that 875 of organizations already recognize they have a skills gap or will have one soon. Closing that gap starts with fixing the process the new skill has to operate inside of, not just training people on a tool.
