Love and Volleyball:

Recently I was injured during the thing I love the most- playing volleyball. In the moment the injury occurred if felt like time stopped and all I could say was, “I hear you.”

This wasn’t the first time I severed this type of injury. Approx 7 years ago around this same time- I injured my self doing the same thing- playing volleyball. Yes, you heard me correctly. I am one of the few people how has ruptured both tendons.

The journey to healing is great but the journey to self discovery is greater…here is my journey

Sunday was momentous. To be in the the building with Ms. Opal Lee, 95 year old activist- ‘Grandmother of Juneteenth’ who fought for over 40 Years to Make Juneteenth a National Holiday.

The Dallas Wings honored her on Sunday and alongside the Wings President is another person to be honored, our generational leader LaDondra Wilson who dutifully pours into the community everyday through her efforts with the Dallas Wings Community Foundation.

La Dondra provided the mechanism and we all followed suite. I had the honor of bringing the mother of West Dallas and community activist, Dr. Patricia Stephens-who’s contributions has had and continues to have an impact on a multitude of leaders.

Young and old alike we are a product of their collective leadership and all have the seeds of Ms. Opal and Dr. Patricia Stephens magic within us….

In celebration of Women’s History Month, I would be remissed if I did not honor my friend/high school alumni Dallas Wings Wings VP LaDondra Wilson (She, Her, Hers). To hear her speak at the WISE (Women in Sports and Events, Inc.) on how sports are impacting our local community amongst her executive-level female sports business peers from Texas Rangers Baseball Club, Dallas Mavericks, FC Dallas and other pro teams was a nostalgic experience. You had to be there.

After the panel we all rolled up our sleeves to support Hunger Busters a charity focused on Feeding Kids and Fueling Futures in DISD, a district that helped shape our lives.

Neither LaDondra or myself designed our lives but we did take the road less traveled by and that has made all the difference.

Celebrating Black Athletes who have paved the way:

Flo Hyman (1954 - 1986) was a 6'5" hitter whose power and accuracy at the net helped lift the national team from an also-ran to a world championship contender. The squad failed to qualify for the 1976 Montreal Olympics and had to sit out 1980 due to the U.S.-led boycott. Hyman then led the team to bronze medals at the 1981 World Cup, where she was selected the best hitter, and the 1982 World Championships.

At Los Angeles in 1984, she led her team past China in a pool-play match before the United States fell short in the rematch for the gold medal.

Along the way in her career, Hyman was a three-time college All-American, the AIAW National Player of the Year in 1976, and a frequent all-tournament team selection.

Thank you, Flo, for your contribution to our sport in your short but impactful life! 🏐
