The career advice you grew up with is quietly costing you the job in 2026. I’ve recruited for over 20 years, and some of the “rules” people still follow were built for a job market that no longer exists.
“Get your foot in the door anywhere” — the wrong door is hard to walk back out of. The role you take teaches the market how to see you.
“Don’t apply unless you meet 100%” — job descriptions are wish lists, not checklists. If you hit around 60% and can speak to the rest, apply.
“Stay loyal and you’ll be rewarded” — loyalty rarely shows up in your paycheck. Two well-timed moves often out-earn a decade in one seat.
“Follow up with a phone call” — in 2026 that reads as ignoring the process. A short, specific note to the recruiter does far more.
None of this came from a bad place. It just hasn’t kept up. Your job search should match the market you’re actually in.
