Operation Lifesaver is officially celebrating its 50th anniversary this week, so I "took the pledge" to continue doing what I've always done!

Her Majesty, one score years ago, in her private office aboard The Royal Train.

A well-known fancier of fine passenger train service, she said railways offered "one of the few places where I can truly relax."

She seemed to hold a special fondness for the Great Western and was never shy about acknowledging our industry's pivotal role in achieving final victory during World War II (especially throughout the Dominion of Canada and these United States).

A woman of impeccable standards and honourable to her dying breath, she was one of the finest examples of selfless public service most of us will ever live to see.

From the That-Didn't-Last-Very-Long department...

This photograph was exposed about two score years ago, when I owned a second trick job in Dallas Union Terminal's baggage room.

Amtrak's "leaders" had unilaterally decided all Baggage/Mail/Express employees must wear safety glasses and hardhats in order to perform their work without injury - which is the part that didn't last too long!

Domestic railroad baggage cars tend to carry most items on the floor, not upon overhead racks.

I'm not quite sure what was supposed to fall on us, potentially injuring our noggins, but the hat made for a nice bit of railroad memorabilia!

My darling Michele took this photograph when we were still engaged to be married!

RICHARD H. WAINSCOTT
1951 - 2018

A few days ago, I realised a very sad anniversary had just passed.

It has now been four years since the death of my fellow Railroader and very dear friend, Richard Wainscott.

Richard was, without question, one of the best mechanical men I've ever known. For 42 years, he was an indispensable part of the management team at the Museum of the American Railroad. He wore many hats there, but his most important role was that of Chief Mechanical Officer.

Always eager to learn and to share that knowledge with others, Richard was well respected among those who also understood what it took to keep railroad equipment properly functioning and our history carefully preserved.

An humble man, Richard never coveted the spotlight; however, in his absence, I will gladly say he was a Railroader's Railroader, an expert in his field and truly one-of-a-kind.

The first image was recorded at the Museum by famed Hollywood portrait photographer Dan Winters and comes courtesy of Richard's widow, Sharon.

The second picture was provided by the Museum's long-time C.E.O., Bob LaPrelle.

What an inauspicious introduction to Kansas City, Missouri's streetcar operation!

I was eventually able to secure a ride with a very friendly, professional and knowledgeable motorman (who is himself a railfan), but still...

🤷🏼‍♀️🙄🤦🏼‍♀️

Never mind. It was far funnier than aggravating.

I've had worse!

El Rio de los Brazos de Dios..."The River of the Arms of God," as seen from today's train #22, Amtrak's "Texas Eagle," travelling along the former Santa Fe Railway through north central Texas.

At this point, the Brazos River delineates the border between McLennan County and Hill County.

I'm not sure if I should apologise for the song, or not!

Wow. This is my kind of layout!

We're looking at the south station throat of the passenger depot in Rensselaer, New York (the only railway station currently serving the state capital of Albany).

The terminal building itself (completed in '02) is pretty impressive - and it contains all the public services (e.g. news stand) one might expect to find in any station of import.

But, it's the operational infrastructure that really turns my head! A whole bevy of dwarf signals and at least one operational double slip switch makes for a truly beautiful sight!

Rachael, the dining/lounge service employee-in-charge* on today's Texas Eagle operating from San Antonio to Chicago (train #22), with yours truly wearing one of Amtrak's new 50th anniversary pins.

Amtrak On-Board Service employees are now being given a cache of collector's pins prior to every trip, then choose certain passengers who would enjoy a uniquely special prize.

I was voted best-dressed!

🚂😉🤠
