PRESS RELEASE: OAKDALE ROAD FIRE
At approximately 1:30 p.m. on August 3, 2026, SW Polk Fire District responded to a reported vegetation fire in the 18075 block of Oakdale Road. Driven by dry fuels and strong afternoon winds, the fire spread rapidly after ignition, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a three-alarm wildland fire as multiple homes became threatened.
The fire ultimately burned approximately 6.6 acres of grass, brush, and light timber while threatening six residential structures. Through an aggressive and coordinated suppression effort, firefighters successfully protected all six homes, preventing the loss of any residences. Several outbuildings were damaged before crews were able to bring the fire under control.
Firefighters from SW Polk Fire District, assisted by the Oregon Department of Forestry, Falls City Fire Department, Dallas Fire & EMS, Polk County Fire District No.1, and Yamhill County Task Force, mounted a coordinated attack on the fast-moving fire. Through rapid response, effective structure protection operations, and outstanding interagency cooperation, crews contained and extinguished the fire in approximately two hours.
As suppression efforts continued, afternoon winds began to diminish, allowing firefighters to gain the upper hand. While the rapid and aggressive response of firefighting resources was instrumental in protecting homes and containing the fire, the reduction in wind speed also played a significant role in limiting further fire growth. Had the strong winds persisted, this incident had the potential to become a much larger disaster for the Oakdale community.
"The quick response of our firefighters and the outstanding cooperation between our partner agencies made the difference today," said Fire Chief Fred Hertel. "This fire spread rapidly under wind-driven conditions and immediately threatened multiple homes. Our crews aggressively engaged the fire to protect structures and stop its advance. We were also fortunate that the afternoon winds subsided when they did. Had they continued at the same intensity, this incident could have become a much larger disaster. Today's outcome is a testament to the professionalism, training, and teamwork demonstrated by everyone on scene."
The fire burned to the edge of several structures, leaving visible scorch marks and evidence of radiant heat exposure. Firefighters remained on scene into the evening extinguishing hot spots, conducting mop-up operations, and ensuring the fire was fully secured.
Fortunately, no residences were destroyed, no civilian injuries were reported, and no firefighters were injured during suppression operations.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
SW Polk Fire District reminds residents that fire danger remains high throughout the region. Dry vegetation, warm temperatures, and afternoon winds can rapidly spread even small fires. Residents are urged to avoid activities that could ignite dry fuels and to maintain defensible space around their homes.
