Marilyn Monroe never stopped studying her craft.

As a student of Lee and Paula Strasberg at the Actors Studio, Marilyn filled pages with handwritten notes on acting, character, and self-reflection. Among them: “The actor is never the critic.”

Preserved for more than 70 years, these rare notes reveal a side of Marilyn often overshadowed by her fame. Here she’s a dedicated student, thoughtful artist, and woman in constant pursuit of growth.

“This is one of the most important Constable discoveries in decades,” says Marianne Berardi, Heritage’s Co-Director of European Art. “Not only because it is a previously unknown autograph work tied directly to The Cornfield, but because it significantly deepens our understanding of how Constable developed one of the defining images of British art.”

It was standing room only at Heritage Auction’s London office when the newly discovered full-scale study of John Constable’s The Cornfield was unveiled to the public for the first time, in a room filled with Constable scholars, collectors, and enthusiasts. The final work is on display at the National Gallery in London. Constable’s preparatory work, valued at $500,000 and headed to auction on June 5, had been hidden in plain sight on the walls of a small museum in rural East Texas for over 50 years. Discoveries like this happen, according to Sarah Cove, a technical art historian, conservator, and founder of the Constable Research Project, but the discovery of Constable’s work, however, is the most significant in Cove’s 40-year career.

A beautiful Fabergé table clock from Marilyn Monroe’s New York apartment, later gifted by Marilyn to Patricia Rosten, daughter of Marilyn’s close friends Norman and Hedda Rosten.

In this video, Heritage Auctions Deputy Chairman, Decorative Arts | Director, Russian Works of Art explores the remarkable craftsmanship behind the piece, created by famed Fabergé workmaster Henrik Wigström in St. Petersburg between 1908–1917.

But what makes the clock truly special is the story behind it. After admiring the clock during a visit, Patricia recalled that Marilyn insisted she take it home.

Never before offered at auction, the clock reflects both Marilyn’s refined eye and the deep bond she shared with the Rosten family.
