Emotional support animal Zoey has a gift for knowing exactly when Bethany needs comfort.

“She always comes to me, makes me pet her and then lays down. Her little kisses brighten my day.”

For Bethany, Zoey is more than a cat. She is a steady source of calm on hard days, a loving companion every single day, and a cherished part of the family.

At American Service Pets, we’re honored to celebrate the animals who bring comfort, connection, and emotional support to the people who love them.

If you have a valid Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter, federal housing guidelines may allow you to live with your support animal even in housing with “no pet” policies.

Under the Fair Housing Act (FHA), housing providers are generally required to provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with qualifying disabilities when properly documented by a licensed mental health professional. This means an emotional support animal is not considered a typical pet and pet fees or breed restrictions may not apply in many situations.

However, there are some exceptions, and requirements can vary depending on the type of housing and specific circumstances. A housing provider may request reliable documentation from a licensed provider and may deny accommodation in limited cases, such as if the animal poses a direct threat to health or safety or would cause substantial property damage.

American Service Pets helps connect qualified individuals with licensed mental health professionals through a secure telehealth process to determine whether an ESA letter online may be appropriate.

Understanding your housing rights can help you make informed decisions and advocate for appropriate accommodations. Learn more at AmericanServicePets.com.

Today is National Kids and Pets Day, a reminder of how meaningful the bond between children and animals can be.

For many kids, a pet is more than a companion. Animals can help children build confidence, practice responsibility, and feel a sense of comfort during times of stress, anxiety, or life transitions. Some families find that an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) plays an important role in helping children feel more calm, supported, and secure in their daily environment.

When a child is experiencing emotional or mental health challenges that significantly impact daily life, a licensed mental health professional may determine that an ESA letter is clinically appropriate as part of an overall care plan. An emotional support animal can provide consistent companionship and help create routines that support emotional wellbeing.

Every child’s needs are different, but the connection between kids and animals is often something truly special.

Suzanne shared that caring for Queenie helps her stay grounded and emotionally steady day to day. Between walks, playtime, and the simple routine of showing up for her puppy, Queenie gives Suzanne something positive to focus on — and that can make a real difference.

For many people, an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) provides companionship, structure, and a sense of stability during difficult seasons. When symptoms of anxiety, depression, or other emotional health challenges begin to affect daily life, a licensed mental health professional may determine that an ESA letter is appropriate as part of an overall care plan.

Queenie sounds like a pretty special motivator. 🐾

If you’ve been thinking about getting an Emotional Support Animal (ESA), the first step is understanding whether you may qualify.

Our quick ESA qualification quiz helps you determine whether your symptoms may meet the criteria for an evaluation with a licensed mental health professional. Many individuals explore an ESA letter online when experiencing conditions such as anxiety, depression, stress-related challenges, or other emotional health concerns that impact daily life.

The quiz is simple, private, and designed to help you better understand your options before moving forward with a telehealth evaluation. If appropriate, a licensed provider can determine whether an emotional support animal letter may support housing accommodations under applicable guidelines.

Take the first step today and see if an ESA may be right for you.

Losing a dog is something no pet owner ever wants to experience. On National Lost Dog Awareness Day, it’s a good time to double check that your pet has the basics in place in case they ever get out unexpectedly.

A few simple steps can make a big difference:

• Make sure your dog’s ID tag has your current phone number
• Consider microchipping (and confirm your contact info is up to date)
• Take a few clear photos of your pet from different angles
• Keep a recent photo easily accessible on your phone
• Check fences, gates, and collars regularly for wear or weak spots
• If your pet is prone to anxiety, plan ahead for situations like fireworks, travel, or storms

If your dog does go missing, post in local neighborhood groups, contact nearby shelters and vets, and physically check the surrounding area. Many lost pets are found close to home.

For many people, pets are more than companions...they’re an important part of emotional stability and daily routine. Taking a few preventative steps now can help protect that bond.

Many people are surprised to learn that Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are not limited to one specific type of pet.

Dogs and cats are the most common ESAs, but other domesticated animals may also qualify when they provide meaningful emotional support related to a mental or emotional health condition. What matters most is the role the animal plays in supporting your wellbeing, not the breed.

For a Psychiatric Service Animal (PSA), the animal must be a dog that can be trained to perform specific tasks that assist with a qualifying mental health condition, such as interrupting panic episodes, providing grounding support, or helping create stability in daily routines.

American Service Pets helps connect qualified individuals with licensed mental health professionals through a secure telehealth process to determine whether an ESA letter or psychiatric service animal documentation may be appropriate. We also offer PSA task training through iTrain Academy, a fully online program designed to help support your training journey.
