A grant platform told me my application answers were "Moderate."
There was a progress bar. A color-coded badge. AI tips telling me exactly how to improve. I was about to spend an hour rewriting paragraphs.
Then I found the actual scoring. The award ranged from $200 to $1,000 — and it had nothing to do with my answers. It was a checklist behind an unlabeled button. Add a product. Publish a post. Connect payouts. Eight boxes, $100 each.
$800 sat behind a button with no badge on it, while a meter pointed me somewhere that paid nothing.
I build automation systems for a living, and I still almost fell for it. Because the loud metric feels like progress. It's designed to.
So now I ask one question before I optimize anything: what actually triggers the outcome I want, and is that what this screen is showing me?
Most of us have a version of this. Mine, if I'm honest, is that I've spent years perfecting delivery while underpricing the work. Delivery was never the problem. It was just the thing with the visible meter on it.
