It’s starting to heat up here in SoCal. With that, irrigation systems require special attention! Managing ET (evapotranspiration, not the alien) is incredibly important in keeping your plants alive and happy. Thankfully, our water team knows all about it and can help ([email protected])

(P.S. No meteorologists were consulted in the making of this video)

The Monarch Team spent some time yesterday discussing our core values, why we do what we do, and how we can continue to be the best at it ;)

We also had a couple of guest speakers, did a great job of sharing his inspirational story.
Never Ever Give Up!

It’s always a great day to have a great day 😊

New game: Spot the Killdeer.
Difficulty level: Impossible.
There are even two of them, good luck!
(I took this photo yesterday and even I had to triple check to make sure I had the right one.)

Happy Thursday! Hope you’re not feeling too …
SLUG-gish …

Anyway, some pro (non-harmful) tips to deal with everyone’s favorite little decomposer / pest combo:
1. Reduce the habitat. They Love shady and wet areas, make sure you’re watering plants at their base and removing debris from the area to make it less like home for the little ones (one part of an irrigation audit in the second photo to show how we do that around here @ Monarch 😎).
2. Create barriers around your plants with sharp or unpleasant natural goods like eggshells or coffee grounds (turns out, slugs hate caffeine, which is inconceivable to me)

Sultry succulent silhouettes are filling up the landscape for the cool season. Having dynamic negative space planned in your design gives you a chance to view things differently. Spectacular Agave blooms are lost against cluttered backgrounds and are at their best when they are allowed to be dramatic (me too).

Break out the WD-40, this baby’s got rust.

Well, yes, it’s “rust” which is a fungal foliar disease but you absolutely shouldn’t use automotive products to fix it. Poplar leaf rust (Melampsora) will present as tiny pustules that will prematurely kill leaves. Preventative measures in late winter or early spring (before new leaves emerge) will help control this disease once it has taken hold. Planting species that are resistant to these pathogens would be ideal if you have the option.

Our arbor team is ready to help identify, diagnose, and recommend treatment for your weird tree issues!

Happy on this beautiful . This holiday brought to you by in an effort to spread the love of and education. Monarch was proud to make a donation to CNPS today - gifts over $25 have the added impact of providing CA natives to our schools and communities. Let’s make sure the next generation of Californians love and protect their ecosystem!

By the way, that’s a gorgeous Heteromeles arbutifolia (toyon or Christmas berry) you’re admiring. California native, naturally.
