Mouse traps don’t just catch mice!
Sometimes, they catch a much bigger problem.

These large snake captures happened inside local homes after rodent activity brought them indoors.
Snakes follow food. If mice are getting into your basement, garage, crawlspace, or home, snakes may follow the same paths.
If you find a snake in your home:
• Keep everyone, including pets, at a safe distance
• Do not attempt to grab, corner, or identify it yourself
• Call a licensed wildlife professional for safe removal
At Scribner Pest & Wildlife Control, we remove the snake, address the rodent problem, and inspect for the entry points that allowed wildlife inside.

Heat ON. AC OFF. Basement smells… weird? 👃🍂
5 common reasons for that fall basement smell:
1️⃣ Dry drain traps = sewer gas. Pour water down every drain.
2️⃣ Musty smell = mold or mildew. Run a dehumidifier.
3️⃣ Burning dust = furnace start-up. Should go away in a few days.
4️⃣ Sweet, rotten smell = possibly a dead mouse in a wall 🐭
5️⃣ Sharp ammonia smell = rodent or wildlife urine
Refilled the drains and it still stinks? Let us take a look. We find the source and seal the entry points.

That basement smell? Here’s what it might be.

Heat’s on, AC’s off, and suddenly the basement smells… off. Fall is when we get the most calls about basement smells in Fairfield County. Here are the usual causes:

Dry drain traps: Floor drains and unused sinks lose their water seal over the summer, and sewer gas comes right up. Fix: pour a gallon of water down each drain. A spoonful of mineral oil on top slows evaporation.

Mold or mildew: Summer humidity plus a cool, closed-up basement gives you that musty smell. Check corners, boxes, and behind stored items. Run a dehumidifier.

Furnace start-up: A burning-dust smell the first few days is normal. If it lasts, call your HVAC tech.

Dead rodents: This is the one people don’t expect. Mice move inside in the fall, and when one dies in a wall or ceiling, you’ll smell it. A strong, sweet, rotten smell that gets worse each day is a warning sign.

Wildlife droppings and urine: Mice, squirrels, or raccoons nesting in the basement or crawlspace leave a sharp ammonia smell.

If you’ve refilled the drains and the smell is still there, the source might have four legs. We’ll inspect, find the source, and seal up the entry points so it doesn’t happen again.

Is That Noise in Your Attic… Bats?

Hearing odd sounds overhead? Before you blame squirrels or mice, check for these signs that bats may have moved in:

1. Timing matters. Bats come and go at dusk and dawn. If the activity picks up around sunset and again just before sunrise, bats are a likely cause. Squirrels are usually busiest during the day.
2. Listen for the sound. Bats make high-pitched squeaks, chirps, and light fluttering or scratching sounds, often near walls, soffits, or the roofline. Heavy thumping or rolling sounds usually point to other wildlife.
3. Look for droppings (guano). Bat droppings look like small, dark pellets that pile up under roosting spots or entry points. Unlike mouse droppings, they crumble into a sparkly powder when crushed. (Don’t touch them with bare hands.)
4. Check for stains and smudges. Bats leave greasy, dark rub marks around the small gaps they use to get in, such as gable vents, loose flashing, or gaps by the chimney.
5. Notice a strong odor. A large colony can produce a sharp, ammonia-like smell from built-up guano and urine.
6. Do a dusk watch. Grab a chair about 20 minutes before sunset and watch your roofline. If you see bats leaving, you have your answer.
Why it matters: Bat guano can carry fungal spores linked to histoplasmosis, and bats can carry rabies. Please don’t try to handle or trap bats yourself.

The good news is that bats can be removed humanely. At Scribner Pest & Wildlife Control, we inspect your home, find every entry point, and use safe, humane exclusion so bats leave and can’t get back in. Then we seal your home for the long term.

Keep Mice Out This Fall: 6 Free DIY Tips from Scribner Pest & Wildlife

As temperatures drop across the South Coast, mice and rats start looking for a warm place to spend the winter, and your home is at the top of their list. A mouse can squeeze through a gap the size of a dime. Here are a few simple, free things you can do this weekend to keep them out:
1. Walk your foundation. Look for gaps around pipes, dryer vents, utility lines, and where siding meets the foundation. Steel wool stuffed into small openings is a quick, cheap fix. Mice won’t chew through it.
2. Check your doors. If you can see daylight under a garage or exterior door, a mouse can get in. Replace worn weatherstripping and door sweeps.
3. Move the firewood. Stack firewood at least 20 feet from the house and off the ground. Woodpiles make great rodent hideouts.
4. Lock up food sources. Store birdseed, pet food, and grass seed in sealed metal or heavy plastic bins, especially in garages and sheds.
5. Trim it back. Cut shrubs, vines, and tree limbs away from the house so rodents can’t use them to reach your roofline.
6. Clear the clutter. Basements, attics, and garages full of boxes give rodents places to nest. Use plastic bins with lids instead of cardboard.

Watch for the warning signs: droppings, gnaw marks, shredded insulation or paper, or scratching in the walls at night. If you’re already hearing noises or seeing activity, call us. Our team can inspect your home, find the entry points, and seal them for good.
