Just inspected this house that had spray foam, insulating the attic sheathing. The problem is that the attic boards formed condensation under the foam. The foam was a wet sponge on the wood and after a short period of time, mold and leaks formed. Spray foam in attics can also cause high VOC's, high relative humidity in the home and high carbon dioxide levels. Before hiring a contractor to insulate your attic, consider hiring and independent BPI certified consultant to advise the contractor and what, where and how much insulation to use in combination with proper ventilation. The proper balance is important to avoid mold and to protect the indoor air quality in your home.
