A hole gets built from the tee forward. Here’s a look at the tees on Holes 2, 3, and 11 at Tribrook Club while the work was underway: sod going down, raw dirt still showing, and the rest of each hole taking shape beyond them.

Some of the toughest work on a golf course renovation happens on the slopes nobody notices. At Hole 12, Tribrook Club, stabilization work kept this hillside from washing out before turf could take hold — not glamorous, and not something that shows up in anyone's highlight reel.

But it's the reason the rest of the hole can look the way it does once it's grown in: a clean fairway corridor leading up to the green, the slope beside it holding exactly where it needs to.

Not every part of a renovation shows up in the finished photos. This is Hole 13 at Tribrook Club mid-build — a freshly poured cart path cutting through raw dirt with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance, and a bunker complex still being shaped nearby. Groundwork most people will never think twice about once the grass grows in.

Not every part of a renovation makes for a dramatic photo. At Tribrook Club, four footbridges recently built across three holes get golfers and equipment across the water without disturbing it — supporting the routing that architect Lester George and design consultant Vinny Giles brought to life. Quiet craftsmanship most people will never think twice about once the course is finished.

Continuing the Catawba Island Club story.

Nearly every load of material for this project got trucked in from the mainland — the island is mostly solid rock, with almost no topsoil or clay. When Aspen hit the hardest rock on the property, right behind what would become the 9th green, the answer was to build around it instead of fighting it.

That's how Catawba's biggest obstacle became its signature feature — the natural rock outcropping that backs Hole #9 today.

More of the Catawba Island Club story.

Not every challenge on this project came from the rock underneath it — some came from what was already growing on top of it. Rather than clear mature trees in the way of the new routing, Aspen brought in a "Big John" tree-transplanter to lift them whole instead of cutting them down. The same care went into mature cypress trees, fenced off and preserved mid-build near the pond.

Years later, the results speak for themselves — mature trees and green surrounds, preserved and grown in.
