Missouri boys are back.

I believe Tucker first put this crew together back in 2019, and they’ve been making their way south to fish with me ever since. Sometimes Tucker handles the booking, Dan the Man has taken a turn, and then there’s Smoothie.

A year or so ago Smoothie actually booked the trip under his real name, Andy. I remember looking at the calendar thinking, Who in the heck is Andy? 😂 I still have to remind myself from time to time that Smoothie apparently has a government name.

They usually make a 2-3 day trip out of it whenever everybody can get together, and over the years Tucker and Smoothie have both brought different family members along for the ride. This time Smoothie had his son Jackson with him.

The request for these trips is normally pretty simple: bend the rod on something big.

For three days we secured pogies, mullet, croakers and whatever else looked like it might get eaten, then slipped out into the Gulf. One of my favorite parts about this style of fishing is that when the rod folds over, you genuinely don’t always know what is coming to the surface.

Big red snapper showed up every day. Spanish mackerel mixed in. Finetooth, sharpnose and blacktip sharks kept everybody entertained. And, as usual, the jack crevalle were a crowd favorite.

Then Smoothie hooked a hammerhead.

We saw the shark, fought it long enough to know exactly what he had, and then it broke the line before we could get it boatside for a picture. As captain, I officially ruled that Smoothie gets to say he caught the hammerhead.

Tucker and Dan have appealed the ruling. 😂

Three days, a pile of different species, some seriously bent rods, plenty of trash talk and another trip in the books with a crew that’s been coming back since 2019.

That’s about as good as nearshore fishing gets.

Early and late. Happy Birthday, Scott Corley!

Early, because we fished prior to his birthday. Late, because yesterday was his birthday.

Corley is the OG of all Ugly Fishing guided fishing guests. Corley and I have more hours together on the water than most people will ever put on an outboard engine.

For this trip, Scott booked wanting to do something other than trout fishing. Ironically, our very first trip together was a summertime beach speckled trout trip, but this time he wanted something different.

As his trips get closer, I can feel Scott’s anticipation growing stronger by the day. I used to get nervous about his trips because his excitement about a day on the water is almost childlike—like a 5-year-old counting down the days until Christmas. I didn’t want him to have a good trip. I wanted him to have an epic trip.

Over the years, that nervousness has faded into excitement about sharing the boat with my friend once again.

Scott normally brings some of his friends. This particular trip, apparently they all had better things to do…or so they said before Scott started sharing the results. 😂

Scott always lets me pick what we’re going to do, but he usually puts his own twist on things. Those who know Corley know exactly what I mean. 😂

He normally avoids the dog days of summer, opting for spring and fall trips, but our conversation went something like this:

Scott: “So what do you wanna do tomorrow? How does it look? Can we catch some snapper? How’s the snapper fishing been?”

Me: “Well…snapper fishing has been pretty good. Looks a little breezy in the morning and better as the day goes on. I think we catch some bait while it’s windy, ease on out, and maybe look for a cobia on the way back.”

Scott: “Cobia? Yeah, let’s do that!”

And that’s basically how it went down.

Day one, big things happened—a 52-pounder and plenty of numbers. Day two, Cooper joined us. Fewer fish, but plenty in the 20–30 pound range!

Scott was ecstatic…and naturally made sure all his friends who were “too busy” knew exactly what they missed. 😂

Happy Birthday, Corley. Thanks for all the years on the water, but even more than that, thanks for the friendship!
