In my latest podcast episode, I explored how the product manager's role is shifting away from being a "backlog janitor."

For years, PMs managed long lists of feature requests. But with AI accelerating development, the real value isn't in managing requests anymore. It's in defining the right problems.

The key shift is from asking "What should we build next?" to "What user pain point is most critical to solve?" and "What business metric will this truly move?"

With the ability to build and test so much faster, the premium is now on sharp, strategic thinking. Choosing the right problem is now more valuable than managing a hundred solutions.

🚀 Top 5 Reasons You Need Agile
The pace of change isn't slowing down.
Here are 5 reasons Agile matters now more than ever:

âś… Adapt quickly when priorities change
âś… Deliver value faster
âś… Stay focused on customer needs
âś… Improve team collaboration
âś… Respond to uncertainty with confidence

Agile is about helping people solve problems, deliver value, and adapt to change.
The organizations that learn fastest often win.

I've come to realize that many common product failures aren't technical issues; they're behavioral problems in disguise.

Failed Conversions? It’s often not about a confusing payment flow. It’s a failure to align motivation with the prompt to buy at that critical moment.

Abandoned Features? It's rarely a discoverability problem. It's because the feature never answered the user's core psychological question: "Why should I care about this?"

User Churn? People don't leave because they hate your product. They leave because returning to it stops feeling "worth it."

Without a dedicated expert, behavioral design still happens—it just happens by accident, through poorly worded prompts or ineffective checklists. The financial impact of these small, overlooked failures adds up, and it's a cost that more than justifies the need for specialized expertise.

My biggest misconception about being a Scrum Master was thinking "servant leadership" meant making everyone comfortable. I was wrong.
It's not about comfort; it's about making everyone capable.
I used to believe my role was to:

Always say yes.

Smooth over every conflict.

Shield the team from any pressure.

The hard lesson I learned was that this approach wasn't serving them; it was enabling them to stay stuck. True servant leadership involves fostering an environment where the team can grow, handle productive conflict, and solve their own problems. It's a subtle but powerful shift from being a shock absorber to being a coach.

ScrumMasters: What's next after CSM?

If you've already earned your Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification, the next step isn't learning more Scrum theory.

It's learning how to become a stronger coach, facilitator, leader, and change agent.

That's exactly what we'll be focusing on in this week's Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) workshop.

đź“… June 3-4

This highly interactive workshop is designed for ScrumMasters who want to:

âś… Coach teams more effectively
âś… Facilitate difficult conversations with confidence
âś… Influence leaders and stakeholders
âś… Navigate organizational challenges
âś… Improve team performance
âś… Expand their impact and career opportunities

For more than 20 years, I've had the privilege of helping Agile professionals grow their confidence, sharpen their skills, and become the kind of leaders organizations actively seek out.

One thing I love about smaller classes is the opportunity for deeper discussion, more interaction, additional coaching, and personalized feedback. If you've ever wanted direct access to ask questions and work through real-world challenges, this is a fantastic opportunity.

🎯 Class begins this Wednesday.

If you've been waiting for the right time to invest in yourself, your leadership skills, and your future, this may be exactly the opportunity you've been looking for.

A key theme from my recent podcast episode was the difference between being judged in a moment of crisis and being truly known in a place of safety.

Ace was nearly defined by his fear in the shelter. He was at his worst, and a judgment was made based on that snapshot.

It was only when he was given a safe space that his true, calm personality could be seen. This happens to people all the time. We see someone on their worst day or in a difficult situation and form a lasting opinion. But that’s just a single frame, not the whole film

For years, the Agile software delivery mantra has been "smaller teams are better."

We've all seen the struggles of large human teams—miscommunication, dropped tasks, and general chaos. The sweet spot was often seen as 3-5 people, or at least under 10.

But what happens when AI agents join the team? The math completely changes. I've seen firsthand how communication between agents can be near-perfect, regardless of team size.

In any project, you have three primary levers you can pull:

Scope: What you are building.

Time: When it needs to be delivered.

Resources: Who is available to do the work.

A fundamental principle I covered on the podcast is that you can only lock one of these in place.

If the delivery date is fixed (time), then the scope must be flexible. If the scope is non-negotiable, then the timeline needs to be adjustable. When teams are pressured to fix all three, they lose the ability to adapt to reality.

The most effective agile teams understand this dynamic and make conscious decisions about which variable to lock and which to keep flexible.

A key takeaway from my recent episode is the high cost of waiting.

When a team discovers a critical API change during a retrospective, they've already wasted time working with outdated information.

The same goes for breaches in working agreements. Instead of letting friction build until the next scheduled retro, I believe in addressing it immediately.

A quick, 15-minute conversation right when an issue occurs can resolve it before it becomes an entrenched pattern of failure, ultimately making our work more efficient and less frustrating.
