An Easter Monday poem on the 25th Anniversary of my coming out.

A poem for the 25th anniversary of my "coming out day" (Easter Monday). The reference to the Gospel of John is the curious paring of "the Light" text generally read at the close of the Christmas Eve service (John 1) and...

The shift between
isolation and solitude
arrives in the awareness
of beauty
and the connection
to my creatureliness
that alchemizes loneliness
into the eucharist
of awe.
There the green blade
nudges the hopeful mulch
past the last morning frost
and the rock pigeon braces
against the winds that bring spring
and the affirmation of faith
tumbles from my lips:
I am not alone.

This Sunday, 3 October from 7pm to 9pm (US Eastern time zone), I'm leading on online event, "Introduction to Trauma-Informed Spiritual Practices."

Trauma-informed spiritual practices can help to establish, cultivate, and restore a felt sense of safe and nurturing connection with one's Self, others, Spirit, and the planet. They are often micro-practices rooted in our somatic experiences and attuned to the wisdom of our body and breath. They are not "formulaic," there is not a "method to master." They are not "religious" or "dogmatic" - in fact, they can help to recover from toxic theology and spiritual abuse. They are about safe and nurturing connections.

The event will be a mix of a presentation of a few basic principles, simple practices, and Q & A. Topics will include: The Window of Tolerance, four types of perception, and a little neuroscience of safety and connection.

Fee is "by donation" (but none is required), but registration is required for the Zoom link. You can register via the link below.

I've started creating a new resource page with podcasts from other people related to issues of trauma and spirituality. There are entire podcast channels and single episodes. I try to make mention where there is a transcript (I always find this so helpful) and links to other resources on their website.

I've just started and intend to continue to invest time for updates, so check the page frequently.

On Sunday I hosted an online Film Reflection for those who had watched "The Wisdom of Trauma." I created a page with the video from the event, the slides for the presentation, and other resources.

I also created a page of summaries, reflections, and research links for the "Trauma Talks" Series.

I hope these are helpful.

On Sunday, 8 August 2021 I will be hosting a discussion on the film "The Wisdom of Trauma" that features the work of Dr. Gabor Maté.

Details about how to watch the film (28 July to 1 August) and join the discussion (8 August) are in the link below.

This is such an important and powerful film! Please shared widely.

From the film:
"Trauma is the invisible force that shapes our lives. It shapes the way we live, the way we love and the way we make sense of the world. It is the root of our deepest wounds. Dr. Maté gives us a new vision: a trauma-informed society in which parents, teachers, physicians, policy-makers and legal personnel are not concerned with fixing behaviors, making diagnoses, suppressing symptoms and judging, but seek instead to understand the sources from which troubling behaviors and diseases spring in the wounded human soul."

Sign up to watch the film 28 July to 1 August 2021.  Register for Resources and Discussion Group on 8 August from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.  Details below.

Sometimes on Sundays
they lay aside
their bitchy bickering
and lounge in
the morning sun
feeling the fullness
of the warmth,
but still keeping
some
distance.

I know
the complications
of packs and people,
it’s hard
to make space
and not growl
or cower.

But the sun
offers itself
as it comes
over the mountains,
the night yielding
to dawn,
it shines
in conflict
or silent settlement
radiating
dispassionate beams.

The warmth
is ours
to receive
if we will
lay down
in stillness.

Very helpful article!

Proper use of gender identity terms, including pronouns, is a crucial way to signal courtesy and acceptance. Alex Schmider, associate director of transgender representation at GLAAD, compares using someone's correct pronouns to pronouncing their name correctly – "a way of respecting them and referring to them in a way that's consistent and true to who they are."

How do I make sure I use the right pronouns for someone? And what if I mess up? Language can change quickly. Here's a guide to talking gender in its beautiful complexity.
