When Congress suggested Wyoming couldn’t join the Union with women voters, the territory’s leaders gave a legendary answer.

They reportedly fired back that they would rather stay out of the Union for one hundred years than come in without their women voting.

This all came to a head when Wyoming applied for statehood in 1889. It had already been a pioneer, granting women the right to vote and hold office back in 1869.

Some politicians in Washington D.C. thought this was too radical and pressured the territory to remove the provision from its proposed state constitution.

But the people of Wyoming stood firm on their principles. They refused to abandon the rights they had already established for all their citizens.

Their conviction won the day. On July 10, 1890, Congress admitted Wyoming as the 44th state, making it the first state in American history to constitutionally guarantee women the right to vote. 🇺🇸

This courageous stand earned Wyoming its proud nickname, 'The Equality State,' a title it holds to this day. 💪

Their actions set a powerful precedent, paving the way for the national women's suffrage movement that would lead to the 19th Amendment thirty years later.
