Tell us about how you started with Rock Steady Boxing
Two years ago, I was given the opportunity to travel to Indiana and become part of an amazing organization called Rock Steady Boxing. My time and training there enabled us to open our very own Rock Steady Boxing here in Huntersville, North Carolina. Since that time, our team of coaches has had the privilege of working with almost 100 boxers who are fighting Parkinson's in classes 4 times every week.
We are beyond grateful to the leaders in Huntersville, our staff of world-class fitness professionals, the families of the boxers, and our boxers who all work together and give there all to make, in our opinion, the best Rock Steady Boxing program in the world.
What have your boxers taught you? Or tell us about your boxers?
This program has become so much more than a boxing class. It has become a community. Our boxers are everyday people who work harder than you can imagine, with more kindness and humility than I have ever had the opportunity to be around. This program has touched so many lives, mine included.
I cannot tell enough stories of how this group of boxers; their families and our team of coaches have impacted my life.
Starting the program knowing that only one boxer was going to join for sure and having it now grow to almost one hundred boxers has been a bigger blessing than I could ever imagine.
My favorite part of every class is the "question of the day". I have had the privilege to learn so much from these amazing men and women and the life lessons that are shared every day. I am grateful for every day.
What makes your program unique?
We have a local “yacht” that allows us to rent out their boat during December the past few years. This past year we filled the boat up completely with boxers and their families. We were even joined by Town Commissioner Dan Boone.
The food, fun, dancing, and community for all our boxers and their loved ones was truly something I will never forget. Sharing the photos from the cruise, laughing, and telling stories with the excitement for next year's cruise has become a special part of our team.
The Mayor in our town, John Aneralla, played a huge part in coming to our classes to help and even encourage folks from the community to join. Helping with his time and even making donations. We can't thank Mayor Aneralla enough!
Tell us about your program’s involvement in the Rock Steady Boxing Community?
The Parkinson support groups our team has invited me to attend to learn and then even speak at has shown me another side of this amazing community of individuals and leaves me even more inspired.
Getting to know the amazing folks at the Annual Parkinson’s Symposium, Fall Prevention Awareness Expo, and all the local chapters whose team of staff make a great impact throughout our community. I am grateful for them involving me in opportunities to educate and inspire folks who are battling Parkinson's.
What has Rock Steady Boxing Meant to you and your program?
There is no doubt that Rock Steady Boxing provides me so much fuel every single day. Even the tough moments that I could have never prepared for. Death, hospital visits, boxers having very little energy, private moments, and conversations where boxers have discussed not boxing anymore. I have realized all the opportunities I have to continue to inspire, coach, and be there for our boxers to encourage them and to make this the highlight of their day.
I cannot tell you how much it means, and I know you coach out there can understand. The moment a boxer pulls you aside and says "thank you", one on one, and you can share a special emotional moment with them and celebrate the success they are having.
I will never forget the look on one of our boxers, Buddy, face and the moment we shared when he spoke about his doctor's visit and how positive it was. He was so excited about his hard work paying off. The moment one of our boxers, Sam, said he was coming 4 times a week no matter what. Dina taking an Uber to and from class 4 times a week for over 1 year. Carl's smile, Alans Kindness. Mrs. Lambs love. Every Tom on our teams punching power!
When sons and daughters come to watch and the look on everyone's face when their mom or dad is out there working their tail off! It is an amazing feeling of pride and gratitude I do not take for granted.
I am forever grateful for each very personal and special relationship I have with every boxer and coach on our team.
