Today marks an important milestone in Microsoft's move toward phishing-resistant authentication.

Beginning September 1, 2026, users currently relying on SMS or voice authentication in Microsoft Entra ID will automatically be enabled for passkeys and prompted to register one the next time they complete multi-factor authentication.

If your organization isn't ready for automatic enrollment, users must be moved off SMS and voice in the Authentication Methods Policy before today. Microsoft-provided SMS and voice authentication will be fully retired on February 1, 2027.
