Dear Kid Whisperer,

I am at a school with a demographic that has quite a few entitled students who don't think the rules apply to them, and sometimes their parents don't, either. I know that the year will get better--we have only been in school for 10 days-- but I am struggling right now. How do I handle this sense of entitlement?

DON’T BE AFRAID TO PACK IT IN

Sometimes you are just done. It may be 99% your kid driving you crazy and 1% the rest of life making you nuts, or it might be the opposite, but sometimes it is necessary for you to remove kid stimuli from your life. Calmly have the kid stimuli just stay away from you, or you stay away from them. This will allow you to pull yourself together and live to fight another day.

DON’T GIVE OUT TANGIBLE REWARDS FOR KIDS DOING WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO ANYWAY

There is absolutely no research that shows any long-term benefit for kids being given tangible “prizes” for exhibiting positive behaviors.

Dear Kid Whisperer,

Why do my 4- and 6-year-old insist on being on their absolute worst behavior when we go to visit family? We live several hours away from most of our family members, so we don't have time to visit very often. I want to be able to enjoy the time with my relatives—but my kids make it impossible as they are just all over the place and don't listen to a word I say. I can't just take them home and try again the next day. What do I do?
