Some of the best leaders on your floor never sat through a business course. Their knowledge was built from years of doing the job and figuring out what actually works.

Mary Fehr saw this firsthand watching her dad run Uni-Fab for 32 years. Her MBA hadn't taught her anything he didn't already know, it just gave her a name for it.

Two people on your team used to butt heads constantly. Now they don't. You figure it worked itself out.

But it actually didn't. It just went underground.

Real conflict resolution isn't "they stopped complaining." It's "they understand why the other person acted the way they did." Skip that step and the tension doesn't disappear, it just waits for the next bad day to resurface, usually bigger than before.

None of this comes from bad intent. It comes from never having a reason to check.

So here's one of five self-audit questions worth sitting with: if you listed every job assignment you made in the last month, would the distribution look fair to an outside observer?
