Now that my post has blown the internet wide open (not really but there's a boatload of views), I have haters. They're not the worst haters but they're definitely haters. Must be doing something right! hahaha.

Hi folks,
while I appreciate that everyone is very interesting in in ovo testing their eggs, I need to tell yall...I'm not the pro here. Feel free to follow me as perfect my methods! I'll tell you when I'm comfortable enough offering it as a service but that's not yet.

I learned to do this after reading a lot, after talking to a bunch of folks who already do it, and after a lot of practice. I would not consider myself even an expert in this yet. I'm doing pretty well and having some success but at only 110 eggs tested so far, I'm not the pro.

You should check out Peck & Petal to find a real pro at in ovo testing. Katelynn even runs a class through Ari's ChickCheck website to show you how to collect samples from eggs. I highly recommend you go check out the equipment and the classes they teach if you want to get good at this quickly.
www.chickcheck.us is the website for the equipment.

Here’s some pictures of our “science chicks”. All girls thanks to in ovo-based DNA testing.

Bad news about Round 5:
19/30 are males. Uuugh. It leaves us with 11 eggs (ten are confirmed females and one I need to retest). Only two of my seven eggs were girls. It’s how it goes sometimes though. It’s 19 roosters that will get culled before they develop pain receptors and won’t be out there for everyone to scramble to find a home. It’s a bummer but it’s better than unleashing 19 roosters on folks from just one hatch.

Yall, I’m running a September special! It’s $6 s*x testing and $8 for blue egg gene or recessive white gene testing. Let’s do it!

We interrupt your normal chicken-themed content to show you:
This looks like an ouchy little nope nope. Saddleback caterpillar is “known for its painful, venomous sting”.

Another baby from Round 4 of in ovo testing. I love to watch them move around.

Round 4 babies are being in ovo tested today.

I’m gonna post a series of these videos so yall can see some of the stuff I see when candling. I just love it. This is the eggs from Round 4. So I’ll let you know the update on those later today as I pulled the samples and they’re in the thermocycler at the moment (later I’ll run a gel and then know who is male/female).

Here’s video 1. I love seeing these babies moving around in there. This one shows what it looks like when you turn on the candling light. It’s always a very cool thing to see how the veins have formed in the egg. For in ovo, I’m looking to see if any of the veins form a Y and then I pull the sample between them, trying to avoid all veins if at all possible (just want allantoic fluid).
