Every day, we talk with good people who are frustrated.

Leaders who can't understand why their team won't take ownership. Companies losing people they wanted to keep. Successful professionals who feel overlooked, misunderstood or simply unfulfilled.

And sometimes, you can hear there is more going on than the problem they called us about. With 30+ years in construction employment, 20 years of coaching and more than 20,000 face-to-face conversations, her passion for this industry is pretty hard to miss. And I've watched her experience plenty of her own ups and downs along the way.

Maybe that's part of why she cares so much about helping others through theirs.

Now I work alongside her, and our entire team sees these patterns every day.

The best General Superintendents don't have to tell an owner they know their stuff.
The owner already knows.

They've earned that confidence by knowing the project inside and out, communicating the truth early, anticipating what is coming and following through on what they say.

When an owner asks a question, they get an answer. When there is a problem, they hear about it with a solution. When this Superintendent says the project is on track, the owner trusts that it is.

They say it’s lonely at the top, and there’s a reason for that.

As a company leader, you build an executive team you believe you can rely on to tell you what’s really happening.

But those same executives want to please you.

They want to bring you answers, not problems, and sometimes they tell you what they think you want to hear.

Of course, that works both ways. As the leader, you first have to be willing to hear and accept something you may not want to hear, without making people regret telling you.

Think about how many hours are spent discussing the same people issues, project frustrations and leadership challenges.
