Florida employers need to prepare for a minimum wage hike to $15 an hour on September 30th. And if you have tipped employees, you’ll need to ensure their minimum pay them at least $11.98. This is the last of the annual increases Florida voters approved in 2020.

Did you know? 📊

According to recent national insurance data, less than 10% of employees fully understand what their health insurance plan covers—yet nearly 80% say their benefits package is a primary reason they choose to stay with an employer.

That means most companies are spending tens of thousands of dollars on benefits that their team doesn't fully understand or value. 🤦‍♂️

The solution isn't always offering more benefits—it's offering better education.
When employees understand their copays, preventative care perks, and HSA options, two things happen:
1️⃣ They actually appreciate the investment you're making in them.
2️⃣ They make smarter healthcare choices, which helps keep plan renewal costs down.

Is your current benefits package working hard enough for your talent and your bottom line? Let's take a look together.

Can Florida employers enforce drug-free workplace policies if an employee has a state medical ma*****na card?

A recent ruling by Florida’s 2nd District Court of Appeal says YES.

The court overturned a trial court decision that sided with a paramedic who tested positive for cannabis during a random screening. The key takeaways for employers:

1️⃣ A medical card is not a prescription: The court ruled that medical ma*****na isn't a traditional pharmacy prescription.
2️⃣ Drug-free policies hold up: Florida state law explicitly preserves an employer's right to enforce drug-free workplace rules.
3️⃣ Policy language matters: The outcome hinged on specific language in the employer's policy regarding safety-sensitive roles and off-duty use.

What does this mean for your organization’s employee handbook and drug-testing policies?

The IRS has officially released the updated Section 4980H numbers for 2027—and enforcement is in full swing.

Here is what Applicable Large Employers (ALEs with 50+ full-time equivalents) need to know for 2027:

📈 Affordability Cap Rises to 10.22%
(Up from 9.96% in 2026)

Employers will have slightly more flexibility in setting employee payroll contributions for single coverage while still meeting compliance limits.

💸 2027 Penalty Rates Are Up

§4980H(a) "Hammer" Penalty: $3,780/yr ($315/month) per full-time employee (minus 30) if you fail to offer coverage to at least 95% of full-time staff.

§4980H(b) Penalty: $5,670/yr ($472.50/month) per employee who receives a Marketplace subsidy due to unaffordable or inadequate coverage.

💡 Next Step: Begin reviewing your safe harbor calculations (FPL, Rate of Pay, W-2) to ensure your lowest-cost single plans stay under the 10.22% threshold for 2027 plan years.

The EEOC has taken the first step toward eliminating several longstanding workforce demographic reporting requirements, including the EEO-1 report for many private employers.

If finalized, the proposal would end demographic reporting requirements that have been used for decades to collect workforce data by race, ethnicity, s*x, and job category.

For now, employers should continue to comply with all current EEO reporting requirements while monitoring future developments.
