❄️LAKE SAFETY IN THE WINTER SEASON❄️
ICE SAFETY GUIDELINES
Ice formation is never uniform, and no ice is 100% safe.
✔️ Minimum Ice Thickness Guidelines:
• 4 inches — ice fishing or foot travel
• 5–7 inches — ATVs and snowmobiles
• 8–12 inches — small cars/light trucks (not permitted on Delavan Lake – Ordinance 19.07)
✔️ Ice Safety Tips:
• Check ice depths frequently—conditions can vary within feet.
• Avoid ice near inlets, outlets, narrows, bridges, and areas with current.
• Snow-covered ice can hide cracks, thin spots, or open water.
• Carry ice picks, a throw rope, and wear a flotation jacket or life vest.
• Use the buddy system—never go alone.
• Tell someone your route and expected return time.
ATTENTION ATV & SNOWMOBILE RIDERS
Permanent “Forever Style” Piers Remain in the Water Year-Round
These fixed piers do NOT get removed in winter and may sit just below the snow or ice surface.
These structures can:
• Be covered by early snow, making them invisible
• Sit close to thin ice, weakening the ice around them
• Create major hazards for high-speed travel
Ride with extreme caution near shorelines and marked pier areas.
Use headlights, reduce speed, and stay alert to avoid collision risks.
🚨 IF YOU FALL THROUGH THE ICE🚨
• Remain calm and fight the urge to gasp.
• Turn back toward the direction you came—it has previously supported your weight.
• Kick your legs and use ice picks, your hands, or elbows to pull yourself onto solid ice.
• Once out, roll away from the hole to distribute your weight.
• Get to a warm, dry place and seek medical attention immediately.
