You lose 3 to 8% of muscle mass per decade after thirty, and it accelerates after sixty.

That number gets all the attention. It’s also the one that’s easiest to fix.

Collagen turnover in tendon is measured in years. Range of motion, once lost, takes one to two years to restore and frequently doesn’t come back fully. Strength after a layoff returns in six to eight weeks.

Six weeks against two years. That asymmetry is the whole thing, and almost nobody trains around it.

Most training after forty is nostalgia with a barbell attached. You’re chasing a number you hit in 2004, and every session gets graded against a version of you with different hormones, different tissue, and no job.

The seventy-year-old version doesn’t need that number. He needs to get off the floor without a plan. Carry both bags up the steps. Rotate his neck to check a blind spot.

Those are built out of connective tissue quality and range, both of which depend on repair keeping pace with load, and both of which take years to rebuild once they’re gone.

Which means the window to protect them is now, while there’s still something to protect.

The person you’ll be at seventy is being built today. None of the deposits feel significant when you make them. Ten minutes. One session. One week of not quitting.

You can’t train your way back to twenty. You can absolutely train your way into a seventy that still does things.

A muscle doesn’t tighten and then coast back to neutral. Letting go is an active process, and it runs on ATP.

Two things have to happen for a muscle to release. Myosin has to detach from actin, which requires ATP to bind. And calcium has to be pumped back into storage against a concentration gradient, which is also ATP-dependent.

Rigor mortis is the proof. When ATP production stops entirely, muscles don’t go slack. They lock. Releasing was never the passive step.

So a muscle that stays tight after you’ve stopped asking anything of it is a muscle doing work. The calf that seizes at 2am. The knot between your shoulder blades that returns three days after every massage. The quad that never fully lets go after a hard session.

Holding a contraction is expensive. Tissue running low on available energy has a harder time doing the thing that ends it.

This is also why the fix keeps not lasting. Stretching lengthens tissue mechanically. Massage changes it for a few hours. Neither one touches the supply side, so the pattern comes back on schedule.

Near-infrared at 810 to 850nm penetrates past skin and subcutaneous fat into muscle, where it’s absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondrial electron transport chain and supports ATP production. Red light at 630 and 660 doesn’t reach that depth. That distinction is the entire reason the near-infrared side matters for anything below the surface.
