Only at the Mayborn School of Journalism do student photographers have the opportunity to run their own photographic services agency using a state-of-the-art cloud-based archive and client services system. Hatch Visuals produces real work for real clients both within and outside of the university. In 2012 Hatch Visuals staff members were the official photographers for Denton's Thin Line Film Festival. Student editors negotiate terms with clients and manage student photographers in the field. Photographers adapt to all manner of assignments and file from location. Photographers' assistants work their way upward in the agency organization through a mentorship and training program. The agency has proven itself as a fast-track training ground for entrepreneurial, management and photographic skills. Hatch Visuals has developed partnerships with PhotoShelter and Graph Paper Press, the industry leaders among professional photography studios and agencies. All funds raised by Hatch Visuals are used for ongoing photography and small business training and for student scholarships.
